I used to watch her from my kitchen window, she seemed so small as she muscled her waythrough the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our homeand I would often watch the kids as they played during recess. A sea of children, and yet tome, she stood out from them all.

I remember the first day I saw her playing basketball. I watched in wonder as she ran circlesaround the other kids. She managed to shoot jump shots just over their heads and into thenet. The boys always tried to stop her but no one could.

I began to notice her at other times, basketball in hand, playing alone. She would practicedribbling and shooting over and over again, sometimes until dark. One day I asked her why shepracticed so much. She looked directly in my eyes and without a moment of hesitation shesaid,"I want to go to college. The only way I can go is if I get a scholarship. I like basketball. Idecided that if I were good enough, I would get a scholarship. I am going to play collegebasketball. I want to be the best. My Daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the facts don'tcount." Then she smiled and ran towards the court to recap the routine I had seen over andover again.

Well, I had to give it to her--- she was determined. I watched her through those junior highyears and into high school. Every week, she led her varsity team to victory.

One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head cradled in her arms. I walkedacross the street and sat down in the cool grass beside her. Quietly I asked what was wrong. "Oh, nothing," came to a soft reply. "I'm just too short." The coach told her that at"5'5" shewould probably never get to play for a top ranked team -- much less offered a scholarship -- soshe should stop dreaming about college.

She was heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten as I sensed her disappointment. Iasked her if she had talked to her dad about it yet.She lifted her head from her hands and toldme that her father said those coaches were wrong. They just didn't understand the power of adream. He told her that if she really wanted to play for a good college, if she truly wanted ascholarship, that nothing could stop her except one thing -- her own attitude. He told heragain," if the dream is big enough, the facts don't count."

The next year, as she and her team went to the Northern California Championship game, shewas seen by a college recruiter. She was indeed offered a scholarship, a full ride, to a Division I,NCAA women's basketball team. She was going to get the college education that she haddreamed of and worked toward for all those years.

It's true: If the dream is big enough, the facts don't count.

An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer contractor of his plans to leavethe house building business and live a more leisurely life. He would miss the paycheck, but heneeded to retire. They could get by.

The contrctor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one morehouse as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his haertwas not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials.

It was an unfortunate way to end his career. When the carpenter finished his work and thebuilder came to inspect the house, the contractor handed the front door key to the carpenter. "This is your house," he said, "my gift to you."

What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he wouldhave done it all so differently, Now he had to live in the home hs had built none too well.

So it is with us. We build our lives in a distracted way, reacting rather than acting, willing toput up less than best. At important points we do not give the job our best effort. Then with ashock we look at we are now living in the house we have built. If we had realized that we woulddone it differently.

Think of yourself as the carpenter. Think about your house. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall. Build wisely.

It is the only life you will ever build. Even if you live it for only one day more, that day deservesto be lived graciously and with dinity.

The plaque on the wall says, "Life ia a do-it-yourself project." Who could say it more clearly?Your life today is the result of your attitudes and choices in the past. Your life tomorrow will bethe result of your attitudes and the choices you make today.

It is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinatepositions. Many of the leading businessmen of Pittsburgh had a serious responsibility thrustupon them at the very threshold of their career. They were introduced to the broom, and spentthe first hours of their business lives sweeping out the office. I notice we have janitors andjanitresses now in offices, and our young men unfortunately miss that salutary branch ofbusiness education. But if by chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, the boywho has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of thosesweepers myself.

Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly started, my advice to you is “aimhigh”. I would not give a fig for the young man who does not already see himself the partneror the head of an important firm. Do not rest content for a moment in your thoughts as headclerk, or foreman, or general manager in any concern, no matter how extensive. Say toyourself, “My place is at the top.” Be king in your dreams.

And here is the prime condition of success, the great secret: concentrate your energy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged. Having begun inone line, resolve to fight it out on that line, to lead in it, adopt every improvement, have thebest machinery, and know the most about it.

The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, which means that they havescattered their brains also. They have investments in this, or that, or the other, here there, andeverywhere. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” is all wrong. I tell you to “put all your eggsin one basket, and then watch that basket.” Look round you and take notice, men who do thatnot often fail. It is easy to watch and carry the one basket. It is trying to carry too manybaskets that breaks most eggs in this country. He who carries three baskets must put one onhis head, which is apt to tumble and trip him up. One fault of the American businessman is lackof concentration.

To summarize what I have said: aim for the highest; never enter a bar room; do not touchliquor, or if at all only at meals; never speculate; never indorse beyond your surplus cashfund; make the firm’s interest yours; break orders always to save owners; concentrate; put allyour eggs in one basket, and watch that basket; expenditure always within revenue; lastly, benot impatient, for as Emerson says, “no one can cheat you out of ultimate success butyourselves."
