Embrace the uncomfortable
We all know what that twinge of anxiety feels like. We know how fear feels in our bodies: the tension in our necks, the tightness in our stomachs, etc. We can practice leaning into these feelings of discomfort and let them show us where we need to go.
The initial impulse is to run away — to try and suppress these feelings by not acknowledging them. When we do this, we close ourselves off to the parts of our lives that we need to experience most. The next time you have this feeling of being truly uncomfortable, do yourself a favor and lean into the feeling. Act in spite of the fear.
The War
战争
This is a true story.
Yvette and Sol were high school sweethearts in Yugoslavia during World War Two. They
met when they were 12, fell in love, and planned to marry once he graduated from high
school.
The war started to get bad during Sol's last year of school about 6 months before he and Yvette were supposed to wed. Yvette's parents, who were fearful for their daughters safety, sent her to the nearest big city, over 100 miles away. Sol stayed in the village and planned to bring Yvette back home after he finished school.
Sol eventually graduated, and by that time the war had gone out of control. He decided that could not bring Yvette back to their small village because she would not be safe. So, Sol set off to the city to join Yvette. Two days after Sol left for the city, his village was attcked and Yvette's family was taken away to concentration campus.
Once Sol got to the city, he was unable to find Yvette. He contacted the people she had been staying with and was told that they had sent her on to another city for her safety. So, Sol found work and was saving up to join Yvette once again. After about three months in the city, Sol himself was taken to a concentration camp.
Yvette continued to travel from city to city, staying with relatives until they no longer thought it was safe to stay. Two years had passed since she left her small village. A year and a half had past since she heard from Sol or her family. Eventually, she too was taken to the camps.
When the war ended and Yvette was freed, she looked for her family and found they had not survived. Saddened but happy to be alive, Yvette made for the United States. She was given passage on a boat to the US.
On board the ship, on the way to the United States, Yvette saw Sol. They had found one another after all those years. They rekindled their love and are still together today.
I have never seen two people more in love.
I have never seen two people closer.
I have never seen two people more destined to be together.
Their love inspires me.
I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time.To be in company, even with the best, is soon wearisome. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers. A man thinking or working is always alone, let him be where he will. Solitude is not measured by the miles of space that intervene between a man and his fellows. 'The really diligent student in one of the crowded hives of Cambridge College is as solitary as a dervish in the desert. The farmer can work alone in the field or the woods all day, hoeing or chopping, and not feel lonesome. beacause he is employed; but when he comes home at night he cannot sit down in a room alone, at the mercy of his thoughts, but must be where he can "see the folks," and recreate, and,as he thinks. remunerate himself for his day's solitude; and hence he wonders how the student can sit alone in the house all night and most of the day without ennui and "the blues"; but he does not realize that the student, though in the house, is still at work in his field, and chopping in his woods, as the farmer ire his. and in turn seeks the same recreation and society that the latter does, though it may be a more condensed form of it.
We meet at very short intervals, not having had time to acquire any new value for each other. We meet at meals three times a day, and give each other a new taste of that old mushy cheese that we are. We have had to agree on a certain set of rules, called etiquette and politeness, to make this frequent meeting tolerable and that we need not come to open war.We meet at the post office, and at the sociable, and about the fireside every night; we live thick and are in each other's way, and stumble over one another, and I think that we thus lose some respect for one another. Certainly less frequency would suffice for all important and hearty communications. Consider the girls in a factory-never alone, hardly in their dreams. It would be better if there were but one inhabitant to a square mile, as where I live. The value of a man is not in his skin.
