And so Oliver was left with only the drunken nurse. Without clothes, under his first blanket,he could have been the child of a king or a beggar.
But when the woman dressed him later in rough cotton clothes, yellow with age, he lookedexactly what he was - an orphan in a workhouse, ready for a life of misery, hunger, andneglect.
Oliver cried loudly. If he could have known that he was a workhouseorphan, perhaps he would have cried even more loudly.
According to Together We Rise, every day, 1,200 kids enter foster care in the United States, a life that is often filled with stigma and uncertainty. To combat this, TWR brings together volunteers to help kids in foster care, and to encourage families to adopt. What's most surprising, however, is how young all the volunteers are.
"In 2008, TWR was founded by college students after one of their classmates discovered that their 9 year-old cousin was living in a car," explains TWR. "They wanted to do something but they came across some obstacles because they were all under the age of 21. Government agencies denied their help due to Federal regulations. There were no organizations like TWR that welcomed young people to join their efforts."
(A happy day in the orphanage)
Today we went to visit an orphanage.
After having breakfast hurriedly, I went along with other volunteers. We took No.80 Bus at 9:30 am. When we arrived, we first gave out some presents to the children, and then sang and danced with them. At noon we had lunch together with the children. After that we read them some stories. The children were also very happy.
We returned at 4:30 pm. When I got home, I felt very happy although I was rather tired.
