大学英语范文简评:上海方言
I give a presentation in a new class or when I meet some new friends in the university. However, I never think I am a qualified Shanghainese because I can't speak Shanghai dialect well though I have lived here for more than ten years. Certainly you will be curious of how this happened.
I am not a Shanghai native. I was born in Chengdu, Sichuan, where my parents went to decades ago because of the great revolution in the 1970s. I spent my first five years there. Then I moved to Hangzhou as my parents thought I should receive formal school education .
The first day I spent in the primary school in Hangzhou didn't bring me any joy. On the contrary, I felt quite sad because many pupils laughed at my Sichuan dialect which was rarely heard there. I cried sadly at home that evening. How could a six-year-old child bear being laughed at by so many people? I only wished that I would never go to school again but of course my parents wouldn't approve. You can imagine how I felt when my parents held my hands and led me all the way to school. I felt lonely in the totally strange classroom with the totally strange people who, I thought ,were looking at me with ironic smiles on their faces. At that time the only thing I could do to avoid being laughed at was to learn Putonghua, which is used all over China and which could help save my dignity. Every child has got a talent for learning language, as it is known to all. So in approxi mately three months I could speak Putonghua as fluently as any other pupil in the class. Since then l never spoke a single word in Sichuan dialect. The experience taught me that speaking dialect
hardly had any good on me.
Before I could find out whether abandoning a dialect so quickly was beneficial for me or not, my parents moved to Shanghai to work here. Undoubtedly, they brought me here, which meant I should again study in a new place. I was eight years old then. My parents brought me to school the next day we moved to Shanghai. Before I approached the door of the teacher's office I heard people in the office were talking with a dialect that I could not understand. Though the teachers talked to me kindly in Putonghua when they saw me tiptoeing into the office I was worried what I could do if I couldn't understand Shanghai dialect. Hardly had I made up my mind to study Shanghai dialect when I stepped into a small shop to buy a bottle of orange juice to relieve my thirsty caused by the anxiety of golng to the new school. I talked to the shop assistanct that I wanted a bottle of orange juice in Putonghua, but she didn't even lift her eyelids. She coldly squeezed two words between her tightly closed lips. Unfortunately, I couldn't catch what she said. So I asked again. Then maybe my words annoyed her because she suddenly shouted at me in Shanghai dialect. The only word I could understand was "Xiangwuning" which means the people from rural places. The despise word hurt me so deeply that I thought there was no good in speaking Shanghai dialect. I didn't like the Shanghai natives who were so impolite towards people from other cities. In the following years, when my father, who is a Shanghai native and can speak fluent Shanghai dialect, wanted to teach me Shanghai dialect, I always shook my head.
Now I can understand Shanghai dialect very well. But as there are more and more people from other cities in Shanghai, it brings a trend to speak Putonghua. When I speak Putonghua in stead of Shanghai dialect, The Shanghai natives look down upon me. Then I will just speak English. Seeing the confusing expression on his or her face, I will leave without any more words.
I'll not worry about whether I am a real Shanghainese or not. I believe Putonghua dominates all the dialects and most people in Shanghai will speak it other than Shanghai dialect in the future. So there is no use for me to pick up Shanghai dialect.Next time I introduce myself, I will still tell others that I can't speak Shanghai dialect without any shame.

Adversity Often Leads to Prosperity
It is an autumn night, chill, quiet and clear. Silver moonlight is pouring through the window, down to the dusty floor on which scatters pages of music scores. He is standing there since last beautiful sunset, stubbornly searching for any trace of sound but he couldn't. His long gray shadow is sleeping on the floor, lingering with him all through the night the shadow of agiant Ludwig Van Beethoven.
He's filled with indignation for all the adversity he suffered. He suffered, ever since he was a little child, for his brutal father never treated him as a son. He was beaten, scolded, in sulted, forced to practice piano playing all the time. And then,he went on suffering the desperate pain brought by his lover who abandoned him. Now he is still suffering, and on the brink of a breakdown, because he lost the utmost important thing for him to be a musician, a composer, and a pianist his hearing. His ears began betraying him since he was 26 years old, and in the end they became complete traitors.
But what names Beethoven is his will. It is his strong will power which pushed him to this glorious aim. It never reads surrender, and grasps his own destiny in his own hands through fighting. For him, music is not only organizing variety subjects and melodies, but also a kind of language to express his deepest thoughts. Every piece of his music scores resounds with the sentiments of his life. He is still writing, to show his unmatched talent; he is still playing, to scorn all the tragedy he has encountered; he is still composing, to prove that he is the winner for life and cannot be thrown down. All the symposiums of his prove it. All his admirers prove it.
Actually life is just like a spring, the heavier you push it,the higher it will jump. Frustration always lies along the way leading to success. I don't want to lose my way, so I tell myself to be (like) an oyster all the time. To live healthily and comfortably, evading any difficulties, or to live struggling, suffering in the exertion to realize your dreams, which one would you choose? The second one is my choice, because finally I will get the most beautiful pearl in the world, someday, somewhere.
Life is so complex, for it is always a mixture of sadness and happiness. You can never separate them. When you are searching for all the beautiful things, you must also face up to the pain and the trauma and the difficulties which sometimes may knock you down and make you loose your faith and hope. But that is life the pain and the beauty, the good and the bad. When there is adversity, being strong becomes a must for us to overcome it.
Adversity often leads to suffering, pain, desperation, distress.., and then anger, indignation, agitation, wrath.., and then encouragement, struggling, devotion, resistance.., and then progress, advance, hope, light or more pain, but in the end, there is always success and prosperity. I believe it.
通过运用一系列的排比、重复,如:he suffered...,he went on suffering...,he is still suffering...;he is still writlng,to show...,he is still playing,tO scerr..,,he is still cempeslng,tO prove...通过句首和句尾的衔接,如i,,.for a11 the adverslty he suffered.He suffered...;But what names Beethoven is his will,it is his strong willpewer...
Nothing the Variations
Sometimes, a young fellow on an airplane could hardly be prevailed upon to give up his seat by the window when he was fascinated by the sights outside. How could he abandon the privilege of appreciating the essence of the sky those floating clouds? The distant ones seemed an old friend being seen off while the nearer ones appeared available within a grasp. Only when they were touching his shoulders could he realize that he himself was fleeting in the wind. He then used his imagination to interpret them. They were lions or foxes, doves or hawks, haunting his mind, firing his inspiration. When dusk approached, the clouds were bordered with a kind of splendor that sharply differed from the impression given by any oil painting. The curious young fellow might have fixed his eyes on all those fantasies until the brief journey came to an end. However, his enthusiasm might also have dissipated after a five minute observation: he could read the moldy newspapers inside instead of the fresh scene outside: he could close his eyes and ears to the goings, taking a nap, oblivious of the sights that once moved him.
It might not be so dangerous to lose interest in the shapes of flying clouds, but it is worrying to see that a certain group of young individuals are losing their youthful vigor, little by little, before the so called "formulated lifestyle." They consider that every day is a repetition of the other day: hence the process appears dry, dull, and "lacking humor." It is clear that an indispensable glow has vanished in the spiritual world of such young people.
Facing the early Greek sculptures that had an Egyptian odor, or reading the Chinese poems written by some Japanese poets since the year 700A. D. , we do not regard them as mere counterfeit but appraise their values in history of arts. A sensible amateur will tell you the chronological order of calligraphers ChuSuiliang and Ou-yang-Xun and will reveal the differences between Cezanne and Picasso. Even if the originators and the imitators might have had "many things in common",their style remained independent and unique because the master pieces that had survived the ordeals of time had dyed every detail with some experience that would never reappear. The stars declare their new positions at every moment; the sun changes his smile throughout the daytime. Seeing the clouds full of individuality, how could a man insist that the delicate factors of history repeat themselves? We may say it is nothing but those subtleties can help a virtuoso to tell forged pieces from the genuine one. A work of art (say, painting or sculpture, novel or music) strikes our soul and, brings us the information that time and space fly so quickly though we sometimes do not notice it. We look back on the places where we roamed aimlessly, on the time killed in meaningless joy, then we compare the very thing that over whelms us at the moment and question ourselves. How much have we taken and how much given heretofore? Should we make this world more civilized to justify the name "paragon of animals?" Every masterpiece of art is unique and every lost flake of cloud is irrevocable. "Botanists show no bias on cypress, palm, pine and birch" (Taine:Philosophic de Art) We also have the reason to describe every witty spirit in the sky with the same passion, to embrace every morning in our life with equal energy, even though we may find it plain or dull at a time. When all mountains are made low and all seas filled with stones, when icebergs loom the soil and all marvels are turned into fossils, when we human beings live on a different planet under a different sun beam, we are still encouraged by the notion that the wonderful variations in the universe were, are, and will be going on all the time. The cerulean firmament decorated with imaginary clouds and the noble human race armed with lively arts are both beauties of the world.
Life will be earnest if we find art "worth seeing." We are endowed with the ability to see and we have to cherish it. Observe the infinitesimal space time and understand the mystery of the infinite, we will then catch the essence of "being young."
