Internet slang such as LOL (laughing out loud) and ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing) enjoys great popularity among teenagers nowadays. In fact, it becomes so popular that many terms now cross from computer-mediated communication to face-to-face communication. Some teenagers even use them in essay writing.
People have different opinions towards this phenomenon. Some people say that it will help enrich the language system and make language diverse. But others disagree, saying that these new words, being abbreviations for existing, long-used phrases, don’t “enrich” anything; they just shorten it and their total effect on language will be trivial.
In my opinion, Internet slang has little effect on language in general, but will greatly influence individuals’, especially teenagers’ language development. The reason is that overuse of Internet slang will lead to the lack of proper punctuations and grammar and has numerous misspellings in writing. That will drastically reduce chances of employment when students graduate and seek jobs. So, for the sake of their future, teenagers had better refrain from Internet slang.

Meanwhile, it’s also the most controversial one. Some students insist that Internet Slang is not only vivid and fashionable but also full of humor and intelligence. Besides, it can also simplify the process of chatting. However, other students argue that Internet Slang is lack of depth of thought. Moreover, it hasn’t been widely accepted. Using it too much will do harm to our communications with others, and even make ourselves misunderstood.
As far as I am concerned, Internet Slang shouldn’t be prohibited. It is the symbol of the young generation, which shows our extraordinary creativity. We should treat it as a “baby language” and guide it to go in a right way.
