托福作文如何写好：好词好句之困难与失败

　　困难 Difficulty

　　1 说到困难，第一个想到的就是difficult，但其实还有一些形容词可以替换：

　　demanding 苛求的，吃力的

　　challenging 很挑战的

　　daunting 令人畏缩的

　　tough 艰苦的，困难的

　　e.g. Although students who choose this highly demanding subject may not get a satisfied score in the end, they will be rewarded with the improvement of study ability.

　　2 名词 difficulty 的替换：

　　obstacle 障碍

　　barrier 障碍

　　e.g. Unavoidably, every one will encounter obstacles in life.

　　3 动词用法除了 have difficulties in doing sth. 也有很多替换：

　　experience a hard time 经历艰难岁月

　　get into trouble 遇到麻烦

　　confront with difficulties 遇到困难

　　encounter obstacles 遇到障碍

　　e.g. Students who fail to follow professors’ instruction and guidance will soon get themselves into trouble.

　　失败 Failure

　　1 最常见的名词是failure，但同样的，也有很多同义词替换：

　　frustration 沮丧

　　setback 挫折

　　defeat 打败

　　depression 沮丧

　　loser 失败者

　　underdog 失败者

　　also-ran 失败者

　　e.g. We all need effective ways to cope with frustration as failure is usually inevitable.

　　2 失败的动词

　　fail to do sth 做某事失败

　　be defeated / frustrated 被打败，打击

　　come to nothing 失败

　　endure setback 忍受挫折

　　be discouraged 被打击

　　lose the game 输掉比赛

　　lose one’s heart 失去信心

　　give up 放弃

　　e.g. It is a pity that the project came to nothing after years of arduous work.

　　3 形容词

　　unsuccessful 不成功的

　　failed 失败的

　　e.g. The unsuccessful experience of part-time jobs has serious discouraged students’ confidence.

　　最后，大家都爱说的“失败是成功之母”这一句，千万不要 Chinglish 的写 "Failure is the mother of success"，英文中没有这样的表达。

　　但是大家可以引用这一句：

　　“Success covers a multitude of blunders.”

　　这是英国剧作家萧伯纳的名言“成功由大量的失望铸就”。
