Today,February twentyninth, is leap day. This date only appears on the calendar once every four years. But why?
Everyone knows the Earth takes three hundred sixtyfive days to travel around the sun.Well, that is not exactly correct. The Earth really takes three hundred sixtyfive days, five hours, fortyeight minutes and fortysix seconds to complete its orbit around the sun.
The problem for people developing calendars (日历) was what to do with the extra(额外的) five hours, fortyeight minutes and fortysix seconds.
People needed calendars to help them know when to plant crops and when to celebrate religious holidays. The ancient Greeks and Chinese had a solution(解决办法).They produced calendars that included extra months every nineteen years.
The ancient Romans had a different solution. In the year fortysix, the Roman ruler Julius Caesar made a new calendar. The Julian calendar included an extra day every four years. But there was a problem. The Julian year was just over eleven minutes longer than the cycle(循环) of the seasons. In fifteen eightytwo, Pope Gregory the Thirteenth established a new calendar to keep a better recorder of the days.Pole Gregory was the religious leader of most of Europe. He decided that years that could be divided by four would add a day. However, years that ended in two zeros and that could not be evenly(均匀地) divided by four hundred would not be leap years. For example, the years seventeen hundred, eighteen hundred and nineteen hundred were not leap years. But the years sixteen hundred and two thousand were leap years.
So leap years are years with three hundred sixtysix days, instead of the usual three hundred sixtyfive. This extra day is added to the calendar on February twentyninth, sometimes known as leap day.People born on leap day may be called “leaplings”. They usually celebrate their birthday on February twentyeight or March first.

(2013•师大附中高一上期中)Teenagers who spend hours in front of the television may have a poorer diet, a new study shows. It is not clear, researchers say, whether television itself is the reason, but it is possible that things like snacking in front of the TV or seeing ads for junk food influence young people's diets.
The study included nearly 1,400 high school students. It showed that those who watched TV for five hours or more every day had less healthy diets than other students five years later. As a group, they ate fewer fruits and vegetables, but ate more fast food, snack products and fried foods.
“We're not able to tell why,” lead researcher Dr. Daheia J. Barr-Anderson said. “But we have some speculation(推测).” People who spend a lot of time in front of the TV, especially teenagers, may have more snacks. It may influence their longterm diet quality. It's also possible that TV ads for fast food, sweets and snacks make teenagers eat more of those foods. TV time might also replace exercise time for some kids.
The researchers found a clear relationship between TV time during high school and diet quality of the young. The heaviest TV viewers ate the most junk food five years later, and those who'd watched fewer than two hours every day had the most fruits and vegetables.
According to BarrAnderson, the findings support experts' advice that children should watch no more than two hours of television every day. “Parents should cut the TV time.” BarrAnderson said. She advised that parents set a good example by eating right, being physically active and controlling their own TV time.

2.B 考查be worth doing。be worth doing意为“值得……
prefer to do A rather than do B意为“宁愿做A也不愿意做B”。
4.A 这是一个复杂的特殊疑问句,句中do you think为插入语,结构为“特殊疑问词+do you think/believe...+句子的其他部分(陈述语序)?”。
强调句的基本结构为:It is/was+被强调部分+that从句。 not...until...
in order that和so that后跟从句,且so that引导目的状语从句时不能置于句首。so as to和in order to后跟不定式,但是so as to不可置于句首,故选D项。
make up of“由……构成”;make good use/the most/the best of“充分利用”,故B项正确。
of my own“自己的”;on my own“单独地,独自地”。
10.B do you think作插入语成分出现在句中,故排除C、D两项;把do you think从句中去掉后,其余部分应为自然语序,故排除A项。
根据主语是none of them可知,用they作反意疑问部分的主语,再根据谓语动词由could understand构成可知,A项正确。
used to do sth.“过去常常做某事”,故第一空选用play。be used to do sth.
so did I表示前者的情况同样适用于后者;so I did表示陈述或肯定前文的内容,故本题B项正确。
concentrate on“集中注意力于”;while表示“当……

28.where 29.who/that 30.Though/Although 31.out 32.in 33.also 34.because/as 35.a
文章的开头介绍了open education可以让学生发展自己的学科兴趣,学会对自己的教育负责,“This way of teaching allows the students to grow as people, and to develop their own interests in many subjects.”

根据第四段中的“My wife and I didn't know how we'd pay for the rent that month. Then your movie came to our town and offered jobs for us.”
根据最后一段的“A few days later,in the church my new friend gave a blessing over my new granddaughter.”
根据首段末句中的“We finished lunch and then decided to rent a boat”可知,作者他们是吃完午饭,然后决定去划船的,因此时间是在下午。
根据第二段中的“but as soon as we changed it,the oarlock broke”可知,他们的桨架断了,致使他们无法划船,这正是他们无法返回的原因。
根据第三段首句中的“After seeing the change of weather,we shouldn't have continued to row”可知,在看到变天后,他们不应该再继续划船,其中后半个分句是虚拟语气,“should(not)+have+done”表示“本来(不)应该做某事”,因此作者认为当时不应该继续划船。
根据第三段的“the boat began to shake like a cradle”可知,他呕吐的原因是“船摇晃得太厉害了”。
51.Leap Day/ An Extra Day 52.A calendar

Dear_editor,
I'm writing to tell you about the discussion we held yesterday afternoon about health and appearance.
Opinions are divided on the topic. Those for health think that we should take activities or have food on the basic of health, and that good health is the resource of study and work. They insist that the people who own good health can be themselves easily but the people who only own beautiful appearance can't make great contributions to society, on the contrary this kind of people will be a burden of society.
But the supporters of beautiful appearance believe that only healthy body will bring nothing good to us and beautiful appearance will surely help us to be successful in study and work. They are fond of the idea that if we are good looking, we can be ourselves more easily.
As far as I'm concerned,I think there is no need to pay too much attention to our appearance as long as we are healthy.Health is the greatest wealth.
Yours_sincerely,
Zhang_Peng
