第一节 (共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Summer has finally arrived, which means kids are bound for the outdoors. It can be exciting for kids and parents to have a great opportunity to go swimming, picnicking or on adventures. This time of year is also a dangerous time of year as almost half of all injury-related deaths in children occur between May and August. Whether it be in the pool, on bike, out in the sun or in the backyard is always important. Here are some tips to keep the family safe over the summer.
Water Safety
At this time of year, drowning deaths among children skyrocket(飞涨) compared to the rest of the year. Never leave your child alone in the water, even in shallow water. A child can drown in as little as one inch of water. Enroll your children in swimming lessons. Some swim schools offer class for children as young as 6 months.
Sun Safety
We are fortunate enough to live in the Sunshine State, where sun shines year-round. But with all the time you and the kids will be spending outdoors this summer, it’s important to protect yourself. Make sure to use a widely-used sunscreen(防晒霜) that blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. Cotton clothing has an estimated SPF of only 6, so even if your kids are going out wearing T-shirts and shorts, make sure they are covered up.
Bike Safety
Nothing says summer like a nice neighborhood bike ride. But bikes are not toys and can certainly cause injury. Don’t forget to always wear a helmet. Head injuries are reduced by 85 Percent when riders wear a helmet and other safety equipment like knee and wrist pads. It’s estimated that 75 percent of bicycle-related deaths could have been prevented with bicycle helmets. When riding on the street, make sure kids understand all riding hand signals, ride with the traffic flow and stay as far right as possible.
21. Summer is called a dangerous time because children .
A. are easily injured B. enjoy staying in the sun
C. want to learn swimming D. refuse to accept advice
22. It can be learned from the second paragraph that .
A. swimming is a dangerous activity
B. shallow water is harmless to children
C. some swim schools offer class for free
D. deaths from drowning increase suddenly
23. In order to avoid getting sunburned, you should .
A. keep your kids indoors B. use a broad-spectrum sunscreen
C. buy expensive clothes D. wear T-shirts and shorts
B
Recently, I experienced a wonderful lesson in how little things still mean a lot. My brother, mother and I live in Hawaii. Our farm is at least a dozen miles from even the most basic of services. Therefore, I take weekly trips to the shop to get supplies. About a month ago, I finished loading up the car and was about to leave, when a piece of paper on the ground caught my eye. I picked it up and read it carefully.
It was a receipt (收据) from the State Motor Vehicle Division, recording the owner's payment of her Vehicle's Registration fees. At first I thought that I could find the owner. So I waited there for about an hour. Although the receipt had been swept by the wind, where would I find the owner in the busy, crowded parking lot? I looked over the receipt for contact or any personal data, perhaps a license tag (牌照) or telephone number. I checked the date, the fees paid, noted the name of the owner and pocketed the paper. I concluded that the best and easiest step to take was to put the receipt in an envelope and send it to the owner first the next morning.
By the end of the week, I received a beautiful "thank you" letter from a very grateful and happy woman containing a handwritten message and a card. In the letter, the woman explained how the wind snatched (夺去) her receipt from a pocket in her car's passenger door. She had searched everywhere for quite some time before giving up.
It felt great to know I had helped someone avoid a loss by doing something which at first glance (一瞥) seemed little and unimportant.
24. What can we learn about the author?
A. He lives downtown in Hawaii.
B. He is patient and willing to help others.
C. He is too poor to have basic supplies for his family.
D. He goes to the shop to get supplies once a week on foot.
25. How did the woman feel when receiving the author's envelope?
A. proud B. disappointed C. appreciated D. angry
26. What can be the best title for the text?
A.A Lesson I Will Never Forget B. Never Lose Heart or Give up
C. Little Things Still Mean a Lot D. Think Carefully Before You Act
C
Teenagers are damaging their health by not getting enough sleep because they are distracted(分散) by electronic products in their bedrooms, according to a survey.
UK advice body The Sleep Council said "junk sleep" could rival(比得上) the consumption of unhealthy junk food as a major lifestyle issue for parents of teenage children. It brings no less harm than junk food to one’s health. Its survey of 1,000 teenagers aged 12 to 16 found that 30 percent managed just 4 to 7 hours sleep as opposed to(形成对照)the recommended 8 or 9 hours by the experts. Almost a quarter said they fell asleep more than once a week while watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic products.
“This is an extremely worrying situation,” said Dr Chris Idzikowski of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre. “What we are seeing is the appearance of Junk Sleep ---that is sleep which is of neither the length nor quality that it should be in order to feed the brain with the rest it needs to perform properly at school.”
Nearly all the teenagers had a phone, music system or TV in their bedroom, with around two-thirds possessing all three. Almost one in five of the teenage boys said the quality of their sleep had been impacted by leaving their TV or computer on. The survey also found that 40 percent of teenagers felt tired each day, with girls aged 15 to 16 doing the worst. However just 11 percent said they were bothered by the lack or quality of sleep.
“I'm surprised that so few teenagers make the link between getting enough good quality sleep and how they feel during the day,” Idzikowski said. “Teenagers need to wake up to the fact to feel well, perform well and look well; they need to do something about their sleep.”
27. According to the experts, how many hours should teenagers sleep every night?
A. 4 to 7 hours B. 8 or 9 hours C. 6 or 7 hours D. 7 or 8 hours
28. Which of the following is NOT true about “junk sleep”?
A. It’s a kind of sleep with poor quality.
B. It’s kind of sleep with shorter hours.
C. It’s not as harmful as junk food to one’s health.
D. It’s mainly caused by the electronic products in the bedroom.
29. The underlined word “impacted” Paragraph 4 can probably be replaced by “ .”
A. improved B. destroyed C. affected D. inspired
30. It can be inferred from the passage that Dr. Chris Idzikowski is very _____________about present situation.
A. worried B. satisfied C. angry D. disappointed

(Text 10)
Mrs. Baker was very tired. She had been working all day long, but the busiest time of her day was in the evening. Her children were picked up from school by her sister, Mrs. Smith, who brought them home by five. Mrs. Baker had to cook dinner so the children could eat at six, and then start on their homework at six thirty. If they finished their work by eight, they could watch TV for an hour before bed. At nine, they were sent to bed, but that was not the end of Mrs. Baker’s work for the day. She sat down for a moment to have a rest and think about what she had to do next.
“Now I must wash the dishes and iron the children’s clothes for the morning. Peter will come back home from work at ten, and he will be hungry. The dishes will have been washed and his dinner will be ready by the time he arrives, but the ironing will not have been done by then. In fact, I doubt whether that will be done until midnight.”

Has the present lived up to the expectations of the past? Throughout the ages people have tried to predict what life in the 21 century would be like. Many science fiction writers did manage to predict the influence the computer would have on our world. Some even imagine that it would take over our lives. One constant prediction was that, thanks to computers and machines, the time devoted to labour would disappear. In 1971, in his book Future Shock, Alvin Toffler noted that time at work had been cut in half since 1900s, but wrongly predicted that it would be cut in half again by 2000.
However, our gadgetfilled homes do meet the various vision of the future: the microwave ovens, freezers, video monitors, dishwashers, washing machines, personal computers, and wireless connections. These may no longer be considered cuttingedge but they have matched visions of how we would live. The domestic robots never quite happened, but if you can phone ahead to set the heating, they may as well be redundant(多余的).
The car, of course, has failed to live up to our expectations. It has been given turboengines, DVD players and automatic windows, but its tyres stick stubbornly to the road. Why doesn't it take off? The past promised us a flying car in various forms, yet none of those ideas has been transformed into a commercially available vehicle.
At least communication technology in this digital age hasn't let us down. Even in the most distant areas people have access to some form of communication device. The introduction of the telephone last century changed our world, but today's mobile phones and the virtual world of the Internet have revolutionised it.
24. What's the author's attitude towards robots and machines?
A. The author is afraid that robots and machines will take over our lives.
B. The author thinks robots are very useful but too expensive.
C. The author thinks robots are not necessary since smart phones can do the work.
D. The author notes that robots and machines have successfully cut time at work in half in the 21st century.
25. What can we infer about the cars from the passage?
A. There has been little improvement in the car industry.
B. The cars nowadays are exactly the ones people wanted in the past.
C. People created flying cars in various forms in the past.
D. There are no flying cars purchasable yet.
26. Communication technology didn't let us down because ________.
A. cheap communication devices are accessible to all people
B. communication devices are available for people living in remote areas
C. smart phones play an important role in domestic lives
D. multifunctional phones today provide great entertainment
27. What is probably the best title for the passage?
A. What is technology like in the 21st century?
B. Will flying cars be commercially available in the future?
C. How does technology change our world?
D. Does technology today meet predictions of the past?
C
If you are in Dubai you may notice a robot police officer sharing the street with you. Your first thought might be, “Have I walked into a movie set?”
The answer is no. That robot is Dubai's newest police officer. The robot has a touch screen instead of a weapon. The robot will be employed mostly at shopping centers and other places popular with visitors.
The robot's face has eyes but no mouth or nose. It stands 165 centimeters tall and weighs 100 kilograms. If the robot works well, Dubai says 25 percent of its police force could be robots by 2030. The robot cop(巡警) was officially presented at Dubai's Gulf Information and Security Expo and Conference in May.
The police hope the robot will make life easier for the people of Dubai. Khalid Al Razooqi is Director General of Smart Services at the Dubai Police. He said the robot can help the public every day, and that “it won't ask for any sick leave”.
The robot cannot make arrests. But it can recognize faces and compare them to photographs on a criminal database. It can also sense emotions. People can use the robot's touch screen to do things like reporting a crime, paying fines and reporting lost or found things. They can also ask how to get somewhere. The robot can salute and shake hands with people. So far, the robot can speak Arabic and English. It soon will learn other languages such as Russian, Chinese, French and Spanish. In addition to having a touch screen, the robot has a camera that can livestream video to a police command center.
Dubai has plans to add other kinds of robots to its police force. Within two years, the city plans to use a threemetertall robot that can run up to 80 kilometers an hour. The Dubai government says the machine would be the world's largest robot. A human police officer will be able to sit inside and control the robot. It will be able to lift heavy objects.
The city also plans to use an eggshaped robot to control parking areas and give tickets to people who break traffic laws.

The New Balance company is a Bostonbased shoe maker whose family of brands include New Balance, Dunham, PF Flyers, Warrior and Brine. They began in 1906, with a 33yearold waiter named William J. Riley producing arch(弓形) supports to help his fellow waiters, police officers and others who spent hours on their feet. He designed his first running shoe in the 1920s and kept expanding his custom shoe(定制鞋) line. In the 1970s the company became an athletic shoe manufacturer. New Balance athletic shoe lines use a numbering system rather than a naming system, as developed by Arthur Heckler.
The New Balance athletic shoe lines serve runners, walkers and other “everyday hero” athletes. The athletic focus of the company has been on the average people rather than on top athletes. While not paying out millions to sports superstars, they sponsor(赞助) running and walking events and organizations to develop more everyday athletes.
New Balance has five US manufacturing plants and is based in Boston, Massachusetts. Some styles sold in the US bear the “Made in the USA” label. But they are also a global company with 2800 branches around the world and products in more than 120 countries.
New Balance shoes come in a variety of widths, from extra narrow to extra wide. This is uncommon for athletic shoes and shows the idea of serving a wide range of everyday athletes. New Balance running shoes are built on two different models to fit different shapes of feet. The SL1 model has a typical forefoot and toe box design for normal to low arch foot types. The SL2 model has more volume in the toe box, a higher instep and a narrower heel. It is designed for normal to high arch foot types.
32. New Balance athletic shoe lines use ________ for the different shoe designs.
A. a numbering system B. a running system

M: What part of your work earns you the most?
W: Well it used to be my recordings but that side has dropped a bit. And there's never much money from the concert. I've done some TV advertisements recently, and they bring in a big fortune.
Text 4
W: I'd like to watch the news. The Oscars were last night and I want to see the results.
M: I won't ruin your enjoyment by telling you who won. There were a few surprises.
Text 5
W: I hear you're going back to study for a while next year.
M: That's right. It's a fulltime course in marketing. My company is going to pay half the fees.
W: I'm surprised you didn't decide to do something parttime.
M: I'd rather concentrate on the course, to be honest.
Text 6
W: I'm planning to go to Canada on vacation.
M: What places are you going to visit?
W: First, I'll spend a few days in Vancouver. Then I'll take a train through the Rocky Mountains.
M: Oh, you're riding through the Rocky Mountains! That's really exciting!
W: Then I'll fly to Toronto, and take a bus to Niagara Falls. I will take a boat under that huge waterfall.
M: Wow! That's wonderful! You're so lucky!
W: Well, I hope I don't get seasick! I'll finish my trip in Nova Scotia. I'd like to bike around some small fishing villages.
M: Have a great time, and take lots of pictures!
Text 7
W: Well, I think my article can't be more awful.
M: Not likely. Why are you so unconfident about your paper?
W: You know I missed the deadline for handing in the paper. So I'm uncertain about the content of my paper.
M: Take it easy. Actually, I read your article last night, and I found that you had applied the general knowledge to specific problems in your article.
W: You think so?You mean I have done well?
M: Yeah, your work is not bad. However, I have some suggestions for you: keep to the point. But cross out the unimportant information carefully, or that may have caused some mistakes.
W: OK, thanks.
Text 8
W: Are you busy this week?
M: Yes. This morning I need to write a business report and this afternoon at 1:30 I'll discuss the report with the general manager.
W: What's your schedule for tomorrow?
M: I'm attending the sales meeting at 9:00. And in the afternoon at 3:00 I'm seeing Mr. Black, the marketing manager.
W: What about Wednesday?
M: I've got an appointment at 8:30 with Mr. Anderson, the bank manager. In the afternoon I'm taking the 4:45 flight to Hong Kong for the conference.
W: The conference is on Thursday, right?
M: Oh, yes, at 10:00 in the morning and 2:00 in the afternoon. After the conference, I'll be free. I'll be enjoying my weekend in Hong Kong.
Text 9
M: Can I help you, madam?
W: Yes. Did you have this room checked before we moved in? The toilet doesn't seem to have enough power and the water doesn't flow away in the shower. What do you have to say to that?
M: I'm extremely sorry to hear that. I'll attend to it right away. We usually check every room before new guests move in. We've been busy with a large conference.
W: That's not what you should do, after all. One doesn't expect this sort of thing here.
M: No, madam. I do apologize. It's most unusual. We do try to check the room as thoroughly as possible. Anything else?
W: Well, your air conditioning doesn't seem to be working too well. It's so hot up here.
M: I'll just try to make it work better and you'll find it a little cooler in a short time. Also I'll send someone along right away to look at the toilet and shower.

Good evening, and welcome to the 10 o'clock news. Tonight's main news:
An elephant has escaped from the local zoo. Eyewitnesses said that the animal went out of its cage during feeding time this evening. It remained unnoticed for twenty minutes, during which time it had left the zoo and caused disorder in the local streets. Zookeepers are now trying to get the elephant back. Until then people on the street are being warned not to approach it.
The farmers' group is holding the annual festival this Saturday at Hill Farm. You can buy fresh fruit and vegetables there, which are all seasonal and pollutionfree. Families are welcome and there will be face painting and outdoor games for children. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the organizers.
Cyclers will have to use public transport because bikes will be forbidden from entering the city centre from tomorrow. Police say there have been too many accidents on the ring road this year. It is hoped that they will make cycle paths in the near future.
And now for the weather: Today will be cloudy for the most part, with possible light showers. For tomorrow's weather: The morning will still be dull. In the afternoon things brighten up, with top temperatures reaching 25 degrees Celsius, so the weather will be perfect for outings! Thanks for listening and we hope to see you again tomorrow.

Faulk and her son, Josiah Duncan, were eating dinner at a local Waffle House when they noticed a man with his bike holding a bag outside the restaurant.
Noticing that the man wasn’t clean, Josiah started doing what children do: asking his mom a lot of questions.
“He’s homeless,”Faulk told her son. But Josiah didn’t know what that meant.
“Well, that means he doesn’t have a home,” Faulk said.
Faulk said he was most troubled by the fact that the man looked hungry.
Josiah told his mother that she should buy the man a meal, which she agreed to do.
He came in and sat down, and nobody really waited on him. Josiah jumped up and asked him if he needed a menu because he couldn’t order without one.
While the man started out by choosing a low-cost burger, they told him to order whatever he wanted. “Can I have bacon?” was his question. Faulk told him to get as much bacon he wanted.
But before he took his first bite, Josiah insisted he say a blessing(祝福) with him. With 11 other patrons watching, Josiah sang the blessing as loudly as he could, bringing everyone at the waffle house to tears,
“The man cried. I cried. Everybody cried,” Faulk said. “You never know who the angel on Earth is, and when the opportunity comes you should never walk away from it,” Faulk said in her email to CNN. “Watching my son touch the 11 people in that Waffle House tonight will be forever one of the greatest achievements as a parent I’ll ever get to see.”

Nearly 92 percent of people in China can access accurate knowledge about traditional Chinese medicine ( TCM ) in daily life, according to a study released on Thursday. But only 12.8 percent of them have at least a basic level of knowledge about TCM, said the study by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
It said seniors(老年人), who usually show great interest in TCM therapies, actually know the least. The study analyzed questionnaires(问卷调查) from more than 87,000 people aged 15 to 69 across the country. “The questionnaire is made up of 140 easy questions. For example, it gave a picture of some well-known acupuncture(针灸) points that are good for health and fitness. It let people choose which one was the famous Yongquan acupoint,” said Tan Wei, associate professor of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
“Those results were not accidental. The majority of older people didn't get enough education,” Tan told China Daily. “In addition, they simply can’t tell true medical knowledge or skills when looking through Chinese medicine information on the Internet or smart phones.
“The younger generation’s ability to understand is much stronger than the elderly and they can absorb medical knowledge a lot easier,” she added.
The research also suggested that the level of TCM knowledge rose with education and income. “The study shows our citizens know more and more about traditional Chinese medicine, compared with a similar study in 2014,” said Zha Dezhong, spokesman of the administration.
“Mass media play an important role in spreading knowledge about Chinese medicine. Nearly 86 percent of people accessed TCM knowledge through media including newspapers and books but especially TV, which takes up the biggest proportion(比例)” he said.
The research also showed a gap in TCM knowledge between urban and rural areas. “Although the gap between urban and rural areas is getting smaller, we will still focus more on the underdeveloped areas and old people,” Zha said. “We will fully use the research to promote the spread of knowledge in China.”
28. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Most lack basic TCM knowledge
B. TCM interested population is on the rise.
C. Senior citizens are best interested in TCM.
D. TCM knowledge gap is becoming smaller.
29. Why do older people have the least knowledge of TCM?
A. They are too old to learn.
B. They can’t answer the questions.
C. They are not well educated.
D. They can’t access the Internet.
30. What matters the most in the spreading of TCM knowledge?
A. Newspapers. B. Books. C. TV. D. The Internet.
31. What will the TCM administration do next?
A. Do more questionnaires.
B. Do more research into TCM.
C. Help the old get good education.
D. Further narrow the gap of TCM knowledge.

As humans encroach (侵入) more and more on wildlife habitats, animals are finding that the best way to survive isn’t to pack up and move—
it’s to adapt to the night life. A variety of previously daytime animals such as foxes, deer, and boars have become active at night to avoid human activity out of fear. But this nighttime switch comes with its own risks.
Researchers looked at how 62 species of animals on six continents changed their behavior in response to human activities such as hunting, farming, and development. The studies employed various technologies to follow the animals, from GPS trackers to motion-activated cameras.
Once night falls, the animals surveyed became far more active than they were before humans arrived, hunting and looking for food in the dark. For example, animals that used to split their activity evenly between day and night typically increased their nighttime activity to 68%.
The team also found the animals responded similarly to these human encroachments, regardless of whether human activity directly affected them. So, a deer might become more active at night simply because it sees humans hiking nearby, not because it’s being hunted.
The researchers believe these nighttime behaviors not only allow humans and animals to coexist more peacefully, they may be able to give us hints as to how to plan conservation efforts accordingly, such as limiting human activity during times when a specific species is more active. But moving to the nightlife could also have downsides for these animals. A nighttime lifestyle can decrease an animal’s ability to hunt and find food successfully and can even affect its ability to find a mate. Switching to a nighttime lifestyle can affect natural patterns of life even if these animals are doing so to reduce their interaction with humans. So, just because animals are becoming more active at night doesn’t mean they’ve escaped the influence of humans.
32. Why are animals becoming more active at night?
A. It is easier to find food at night.
B. It is easier to escape being hunted.
C. They can be less affected by human.
D. They have got used to nightlife.
33. How did the researchers find the animals’ behavioral changes?
A. They followed and watched the animals.
B. They used modern technologies.
C. They compared different animals.
D. They found more animals at night.
34. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A. Any human encroachment can affect animals.
B. Animals can be affected only when being hunted.
C. Deer can get used to nightlife easily.
D. Animals should stay away from humans.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The benefits and risks of animals’ nightlife style.
B. Animals have their own ways to get used to life changes.
C. Animals should be well protected before it is too late.
D. Animals move to nightlife due to human encroachments.

How have you been recently? I’m happy to know you are interested in our student clubs and I am writing to tell you something about them.
There are a variety of student clubs in our school, such as basketball club, computer club and so on. These clubs are set up to meet the various interests of the students. The club that I am in is the Chinese Poetry Club, where we learn, write and share poems.
