I suffered from mental illness and depression when I was younger, and it totally affected my teenage years. But after a long struggle, I found a hobby that changed my life.

My depression really kicked in after my parents moved to the UK when I was about 11 years old. Having to get used to life in a foreign country was very difficult. The friends I knew were gone, and the changes in my environment led to my depression. I had problems in many parts of my life, which made it feel impossible for me to carry on.

At that time, I didn’t understand that depression was an illness. I remember a particular day when I couldn’t find enough strength to get myself home from playing in the park—it felt like I was carrying the world on my shoulders.

Other times, I even thought about killing myself —I just felt so trapped. I never really reached out for help either, as I felt that there wasn’t anyone who could have helped with my situation.

What turned my life around, however, was discovering street dancing. I was introduced to it by a friend, and I started taking classes at a studio in London. After a few weeks, I began to go out and meet a lot of other dancers to practice and train with them on a regular basis. It gave me a purpose, and eventually the happiness I gained from it helped me manage my depression. The dancing helped me get my life back, focus on my studies, and get through university.

My advice to anyone who might be going through something like I was is to reach out for help. The thing about life is that it changes, and you never know what might come your way. If someone had said to me during those dark moments that I would have gone on to achieve the things I have, I wouldn’t have ever believed it.

Just take each day as it comes, and remember that there’s always someone, or something, out there to help you.

Recently, American President Trump announced his budget. One of the budgets would cut all funding to the Institute of Museum and Library services and libraries across the United States. However, as far as I'm concerned, we need to save our libraries.

Libraries provide books and after-school programs for children. They encourage literacy (识字)with summer programs. They help inspire a life-time love of learning and reading in children of all ages. Without them, where will kids with no Internet at home do their homework? Where will kids have a place to study or borrow books after school? Therefore, we need libraries for our kids. We need them so that kids can grow up with a place, other than school , where learning and exploration is encouraged. For adults, libraries serve as a place where they can use the Internet to apply for jobs, get job training, early voting centers as well as book clubs to help make new friends. It can also serve as a place to pick up a book and learn something new. What’s more, they can also borrow a book and get away from it all.

Libraries save our information for the next generation. When we live in an age of alternative (选择性的)facts, where science is ignored in favor of personal feelings, we need libraries now more than ever. We need them to educate ourselves on the facts and hold the government responsible for them. We need them to have strong public participation(参与).

If you agree with me,you shouldn’t be silent on this issue. You can write or call directly to tell the president to save our libraries. You can also write to both your state Senators (参议员)and your district representative. If you do not know who they are, you can find out here. Let them know this is a beneficial issue because all people use public libraries in their daily life.

  A. difficult B. practical C. personal D. wrong

  29. Unlike kids, adults use libraries to ________.

  A. surf the Internet B. borrow some books

  C. do social activities D. explore the world

  30. Which statement about libraries does the author agree with?

  A. Libraries play a more important role nowadays.

  B. Information can be stored in libraries forever.

  C. Government needs libraries more than before.

  D. Science should be learned in our libraries.

  31. What is the author's purpose of writing the last paragraph?

  A. To call on us to disagree with the government’s decision.

  B. To call on us to fight with the American president.

  C. To encourage us to talk about the issue.

  D. To persuade us to agree with his viewpoints.

  D

The noise of chattering mouths settled down as the teacher entered classroom. “Good morning class. I am Riffat Monaf, and I will be your geography teacher.” Riffat Monaf, an interesting name and an even more interesting person. Her introduction took place about six years ago, and since then I have never met a more influential person in my life.

Mrs Monaf not only conquered me with her vast knowledge of geography, but also won me over with her smile and warm eyes. It was in her class that I traveled to the highest mountains and to the deepest seas from the comfort of the classroom. I learned about the vast oceans, the erupting volcanoes(火山), the snow-capped mountains and the green valleys. She would often relate her adventures about traveling to different parts of the world.

Never can I forget the joy of her face when she talks about how truly beautiful this world is. If I search back my love for the environment and geography, I find her to be the source of my love for preserving nature. If one day I became an environmentalist, I know that I’ll thank her for it. Apart from this, she has always greeted me with open arms and she calls her students “my children”. Mrs Monaf’s morals and values rubbed off me deeply and I have always taken her advice into consideration. She has been one of the most consistently good things in my life.

At present, she is fighting a battle against breast cancer, and it pains me to know that after all she has done for me; I can do nothing for her except pray. Whenever I see her in school, she still keeps that kind smile and an expression so soft that it touches me deeply. Mrs Monaf still talks happily about geography, and I know that I can never see what a truly great person she has been in my life. .

  32. What can we learn from the second paragraph?

  A. Mrs Monaf enjoyed telling stories. B. The writer traveled a lot.

  C. Mrs Monaf was a learned person. D. The writer did well at school.

  33. The underlined word “rubbed off” means .

  35. What would be the best title for the passage?

  作文:

  Fast Food

Fast food is becoming more and more popular in China, especially among children and teenagers.

There are several reasons for its popularity. First, it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. Second, you can either eat it there or take it away. Third, the environment of fast food restaurants is both clean and comfortable.

However, in terms of nutrition, fast food is far from satisfactory. It is usually not a balanced diet and low in nutritional value.

Fast food is only a good choice when you are in a hurry and turn to it once in a while. It's good for people, especially children, to eat fast food as little as possible.

The sharing economy has grown in recent years to include everything from apartment sharing to car sharing to community tool sharing.

Since 2009, a new form of the sharing economy has been emerging in neighborhoods throughout the US and around the world—Little Free Libraries. The libraries are boxes put in neighborhoods from which local people can take out and put in books. Little Free Libraries come in all shapes and sizes. Some libraries also have themes, focusing on books for children, adults or tour guides.

In2009, Tod Bol built the first Little Free Library in the Mississippi River town of Hudson, Wisconsin, to honor his mother, who loved reading. When he saw the people of his community gathering around it, exchanging conversation as well as books, he knew he wanted to take his simple idea further.

“We have a natural sense of wanting to be connected, but there are so many things that push us apart, "Bol told The Atlantic.

Since then, his idea has become a movement, spreading from state to state and country to country. According to Littlefreelibrary.org, there are now 18,000 of the little boxes around the world, found in each of the 50 US states and 70 countries in Europe, Africa and Asia.

The Internet has helped to spread Little Free Libraries. But an Atlantic article said that they are something different in a world of e-reader downloads. The little wooden boxes are refreshingly physical and human. When you open the door of the box, chance and your neighbors tastes determine what you'll find. You might find a graphic novel, a cookbook or a tour guidebook.

For many people, this sense of discovery is Little Free Libraries’ main appeal. "A girl walking home from school might pick up a graphic novel that gets her excited about reading; a man on his way to the bus stop might find a bookof poetry that changes his view on life,”said The Atlantic article. "Every bookis a potential source of inspiration.”

Researchers at the University of Chicago have trained an artificial intelligence(人工智能) system, to write fake(伪造的) reviews(评论) on Yelp, a website showing customers reviews on shopping or something else, and it's pretty hard to tell them apart from a human review.

Their study, which will be presented at the ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security in October, aimed to throw attention onto how easily these systems can write reviews like humans and how damaging they can become if they’re not monitored properly.

Since many small businesses rely on online reviews to help grow and keep their reputation, a future where someone—like a rival or angry customer—could crazily fill their page with negative reviews written by a machine is pretty worrying.

And, according to the research team, the threat goes far beyond a bunch of fake reviews on Yelp. “In general the threat is bigger,”Ben Y. Zhao. one of the authors of the study, said. “I think the threat towards society is large and it really misleads users and shakes our belief in what is real and what is not. I think that' s going to be even unimaginable.”

To test how believable these reviews came across, the researchers invited 40 volunteers and had AI generate five fake reviews for 40 actual restaurants. The volunteers were asked how useful they thought the review was and whether or not they thought it was fake. The AI reviews ranked as “effectively indistinguishable”from real reviews, according to the study. Further, the fake reviews were given a 3.15"usefulness"rating, compared to a 3.28 rating for human reviews.

  32. What can the new artificial intelligence system do according to the passage?

  A. It can help train new reviewers.

B, It can tell the real reviews from the fake ones.

  C. It can write human-like reviews.

  D. It can easily damage the businesses.

  33. What does the underlined word"rival'' mean in the passage?

  A. A person who respects you deeply.

  B. A person who competes with you.

  C. A person who loves to give fake reviews.

  D. A person who can control you from distance.

  34. What can we infer from Ben Y. Zhao's remarks?

  A. Artificial intelligence can put the society in danger.

  B. The artificial intelligence is only used by theresearchers

  C. Ben Y. Zhao is optimistic about the further development of artificial intelligence.

  D. The artificial intelligence will help people shake.

  35. What is the best title for the passage?

  A. Tips Suggestions on Giving Reviews.

  B. How to Tell the Fake Reviews.

  C. Development of AI in Review on Yelp.

  D. AI is Coming to Steal Your Reviews.

Imagination and fantasy can play an important role in achieving the things we fear. Children know this very well. Fred Epstein, in his book If I Make It to Five, tells a story he heard from one of friends about Tom, a four-year-old boy with a cancer in his back bone. He came through several operations and a lot of pain by mastering his imagination.

Tom loved to pretend, and he particularly loved to play superheroes. Dr Epstein explained that it was actually a brilliant way for his young mind to handle the terrifying and painful life he led.

The day before his third trip to the operating room, Tom was terribly afraid. “Maybe I could go as

Superman,” he whispered to his mom. Hearing this, the mother hesitated for a while. She had avoided buying the expensive costume, but finally she agreed.

The next day Tom appeared as the powerful Superman, showing off through the hospital halls and coolly waving his hand to the people greeting him along the way. And Tom, with the strength of his fantasy, successfully made it through the operation.

The power of imagination need not be reserved for children only. We all have the power to use our fantasies to attempt things we never thought possible, to go through those things that seem impossible, and to achieve what we never believed we could. Just as Dr. Epstein puts it , “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

It doesn’t mean that you should dress as a superhero for your next job interview. But, next time when you are tested in a way that seems impossible, imagine what it would take to overcome it. Become the person you need to become to win over your challenge and do it in your mind first. So, let your imagination run wild, and dare to dream.

A.to go through some difficult tests

B.to wake up from your wild dreams

C.to become a powerful person in your mind

A.To tell us an interesting story. B.To help us make right decisions.

C.To advise us to care about children. D.To encourage us to use our imagination.

Songs that make our hearts happy can make them stronger too, US researchers reported on Tuesday.

They found that when people listened to their favorite music, their blood vessels (血管) dilated in much the same way as when they are laughing, or taking blood medications.

“We have a pretty impressive effect,” said Dr Michael Miller, director of preventive cardiology (心脏病学)

at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

“Blood vessel diameter improved,” he said.“The vessel opened up pretty significantly. You can see the vessels opening up with other activities such as exercise.” A similar effect is seen with drugs such as statins.

When blood vessels open up more, blood flows more smoothly and is less likely to form the clots (凝块) that cause heart attacks and strokes. “We are not saying to stop your statins or not to exercise but rather to add this to an overall program of heart health,” said Miller, who presented his findings to a meeting of the American Heart Association in New Orleans.

Miller’s team tested 10 healthy, non-smoking men and women, who were told to bring their favorite music. They spent half an hour listening to the recordings and half an hour listening to music they said made them

feel anxious while the researchers did ultrasound tests designed to show blood vessel function.

Compared to their normal baseline measurements, blood vessel diameter increased 26 percent on average when the volunteers heard their joyful music.Listening to music they disliked — in most cases in this group — blood vessels narrowed by six percent, Miller said.

Miller said he came up with the idea after discovering that laughter caused blood to literally flow more smoothly. “I asked myself what other things make us feel really good, besides calories from dark chocolate of course.Music came to mind. It makes me feel really good,” he said.

Most of the volunteers chose country music but Miller said the style is not so important rather than what pleases each individual.

21.The underlined word “dilate “ (in paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to “ ”.

  A.widen B.move C.change D.increase

22.According to the passage, which of the following will NOT cause blood vessels to open up?

A.Taking exercise. B.Listening to unpleasant music.

C.Bursting into laughter. D.Taking drugs like statins.

23.It can be inferred from the passage that . A.blood clots are caused by heart attacks and strokes B.music is better than chocolate for your health

C.the style of music has different effects on different people

D.a person’s overall health is more influenced by how much exercise he gets

24.What is the passage possibly taken out from?

A.A scientific journal. B.A school textbook.

C.A medical brochure. D.A local newspaper.

He is a lesson to every boy who ever picked up a basketball and dreamed that it would change his life.

The lights were never brighter and the crowds were never bigger for a homegrown sports hero than they were a quarter-century ago for Ray Hall. But his athletic achievements, as impressive as they are, are to my mind not what is most admirable about the man.

Known as “Sugar Ray” in his teens, Hall was rated among the country’s top 25 high school basketball players. An inner-city kid from a solid family, Hall took on the challenge of lifting Canisius College — still

recovering from its failure — back to respectability, rejecting more favorable offers. His status of a savior (救世主)

brought more pressure than any 18-year-old should have to handle. However, I watched him matured into the player who led Canisius back to daylight.

After college Hall played professionally in Italy and Greece for over 10 years until a car accident at 32 ended his basketball career. The news that he would never play again shocked Hall but unlike so many others he was ready for life after basketball. When I met Hall — still fit at 46 — for lunch Monday, he wore a cut-sharp gray suit, designer tie and blazing white shirt that screamed Success. “That was always the question — when the cheers end, where do you go? Who do you turn to?” he said. “It starts and ends with that person in the mirror.”

Hall got the concept of academics-first from his parents. He graduated from Canisius a semester early. “No matter how good an athlete you are, you are just one injury away from losing it all,” he said. “But if you take care

of things academically, you are prepared until you leave this earth.”

For the past 14 years, he has been in a computer sales job at Ingram Micro. He married his college sweetheart. They have three kids and a nice house in the suburbs. He figured out early what others learn too late: Athletics is part of a journey, not the destination.

  Third-Culture Kids

Did you grow up in one culture, your parents came from another, and you are now living in a totally different country? If so, then you are a third-culture kid!

The term “third-culture kid” (or TCK) was first used in the 1960s by Dr. Ruth. She first came across this phenomenon when she researched North American children living in India. Caught between two cultures, they

  form their very own. 31

About 90 percent of them have a university degree, while 40 percent pursue a

postgraduate or doctor degree. They usually benefit from their intercultural experience, which helps them to grow into successful academics and professionals.

32_ In fact, many hardships may arise from this phenomenon. A third-culture kid may not be able to adapt themselves completely to their new surroundings as expected. Instead, they may always remain an outsider in different host cultures. Max, for example, experienced this feeling of strangeness throughout his life as a third-culture kid. 33 While this can be a way to create a network of friends all around the world, it can be difficult for a third-culture kid like Max to maintain close friendships and relationships.

For a third-culture kid, it is often easier to move to a new foreign country than to return to their “home” country. After living in Australia and Sout h Korea for many years, Louis finally returned to Turkey as a teenager. But she felt out of place when she returned to the country where she was born.

34_ She did not share the same values as her friends’ even years after going back home.

While a third-culture kid must let go of their identity as a foreigner when he/she returns, the home country can prove to be more foreign than anything he/she came across before. The peer group they face does not match

the idealized(理想化的)image children have of “home”. 35

As a part of the growing “culture”, TCKs may find it a great challenge for them to feel at home in many

  places.

A.Yet being a third-culture kid is not always easy.

B.In general, they often reach excellent academic results. C.This often makes it hard for them to form their own identity.

D.However, their parents can help them see the opportunities of a mobile lifestyle. E. Their experience abroad helps them to understand cultural differences better.

  F. Unlike other teens of her age, she didn’t know anything about current TV shows or fashion trends.

  G. Additionally, making new friends and saying goodbye to old ones will at some point become routine for a third-culture kid.

  Dear David,

I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t perform well in the contest of Chinese calligraphy and that you are feeling discouraged. I’m writing to discuss the problem with you, which I hope might give you some support and comfort.

I can quite understand why you are in a low mood, since it’s common and natural for people faced with setbacks to feel sad. But as the saying goes, failure is the mother of success. It is suggested that you find out the reason for your failure and take heart again. As far as I’m concerned, it is likely that you are not well prepared for the contest, since Chinese calligraphy is a time-consuming art. Therefore, you’re supposed to practise more from now on. Besides, you might lack some experience for the event, in which case you are encouraged to take part in more activities organized by the teacher.

I am fully convinced that you can overcome your bad mood and make greater progress next time. Looking forward to your reply.

  Yours, Li Hua
