It's pleased to receive gifts from your loved ones. I have received many Christmas gifts over the years. But the best gift I ever received was presented to me by a stranger. I never even knew his name and I only had contact with him for less than 60 seconds. His Christmas present to me changed the way I had thought about people and Christmas.
It was several years ago when my wife asked me to meet her at the local department store on Black Friday morning. They had advertised a child's bike that she wanted to purchase for our son. We stood with a very large crowd, waiting for the manager to blow the whistle. After a while, the whistle blew. It was like throwing a bucket of fish into a tank of sharks. I told my wife that if we obtained a bike, fine, but if we did not, I was OK with that too.
As the shelf of bikes began to gradually decrease in size, I saw my polite opportunity to wrap my hands around the corner of one of the boxes. I lifted it off the box and suddenly felt some mild resistance. I looked up to see one of the largest gentlemen I had ever seen in my life. Threat was not the word to describe his presence. He was decorated with numerous belts of metal pointed leather around both arms and even his neck. Tattoos (文身) were an obvious passion of his.
I started to return anxiously the box but he gently pushed it back in my direction and back into my hands. He then directed it into my shopping cart. He looked at me, smiled, and said, “Merry Christmas. ” My wife and I went to the checkout, paid for the bike and went home. All the way home I was thinking that this moment was by far the best Christmas gift I had ever received. The kindness of a stranger that broke all previous views I may have had of stereotypes and prejudices. I will never forget the tenderness of a human heart in a simple act.

Australia is a developed country and the future of its solar industry is looking bright after a record 3.5m panels (嵌板) were installed on rooftops last year, giving the equal output of a medium-sized coal-fired power station. The record 1,057 MW of capacity (生产能力) in small-scale systems installed across the country broke the previous record set in 2012, figures from the Clean Energy Regulator showed on Tuesday.
Australia's solar power prosperity could almost double capacity in a year. The data also revealed that the average system size has also doubled since then from three to six kilowatts as average prices continued to fall. A fully installed 5KW system costs an average of $5,930 in Australia, according to the energy broker Solarchoice. net. au. Its records show that the price has roughly halved in many capital cities since 2012.
The regulator's executive general manager, Mark Williamson, said there was increasing interest in renewals as a way to take control of electricity bills. But more importantly, he said it was also good news for reducing carbon emissions.
“We are seeing a wide cross-section of Australians-households, community centers, schools, and small businesses-receiving rewards under the small-scale renewable energy scheme,” Williamson said. “Our data shows consumers are embracing renewable energy to take control of their electricity bills.”
In 2017, there was a 41% increase in installing renewable energy capacity across all states and territories compared to 2016. Queensland led the way with installed capacity at 295MW, with the Australian Capital Territory taking top place for the biggest annual increase by 57%. “The data collected by the Clean Energy Regulator in 2017 reflects the industry is going from strength to strength. It looks like 2018 will be another big year for the solar industry.”
The total of installed capacity for last year is expected to rise to 1,070MW when all the data is collected. A large coal-fired power station such as Loyd Yang A in Victoria's Latrobe Valley has a capacity of 2,200MW.
28.What do we know about the Australia's solar industry from the first paragraph?
A.It's still risky.
B.It's promising.
C.It's unpredictable.
D.It's within expectation.
29.What's the reason for the Australia's solar industry's development?
A.The entire decrease of the carbon emissions.
B.The autonomous control of the electricity bills.
C.The doubt about the capacity of coal-fired power station.
D.The continuous fall of the average price of installing a solar energy system.
30.What does the underlined phrase“ from strength to strength” in Paragraph 5 suggest?
A.Australia's solar industry is being accepted.
B.Australia's solar industry is developing rapidly.
C.Australia's solar industry is more practical than before.
D.Australia's solar industry is more advanced than other countries.
31.What is the biggest feature of the renewable energy according to Mark Williams?
A.Reducing pollution.
B.Providing enough energy.
C.Lowering electricity bills.
D.Simplifying installed equipment.

Eldon Musk, the entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla and Space X, may have a little more time on his hands, as he's leaving his position on the board of the Open AI, according to a blog post.
The departure is likely the result of Tesla's moving into the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which he said in 2017 would be the “best in the world” and would even be able to “predict your destination.” Musk will continue to “donate and advise the organization,” Open AI said in a blog post on Feb. 20, adding that “As Tesla continues to become more focused on AI, this will avoid a potential future conflict for Eldon.”
Musk and Y Combiner CEO Sam Altman co-founded the nonprofit enterprise in December 2015, its mission is to develop safe artificial general intelligence and ensure those developments are made public. Open AI researchers published a paper on the site ArXiv. org, detailing the possible secure threats that come with “malicious” AI. In fact, Musk has heard the “evil AI” alarm several times. On Aug. 11, 2017, he warned that artificial intelligence poses a bigger threat to humanity, and he told a gathering of state governors that the government needs to regulate AI before robots start “killing people.”
Musk's departure from the Open AI board could mean big things for Tesla. As Eton Goodbye, a financial reporter, noted on Futurism, the move “could signal that Tesla is more deeply committed to their own AI projects than we thought.” He added, “Those who have had their ears to any rumors (谣言) that Tesla is ready to deliver vehicles capable of Level 5 autonomy could take this new Open AI development as a sign that the company is inching
closer to that unapproachable goal.” No company has reached that level of autonomy, which means that a driverless car could navigate any road under any conditions and that all the human “driver” would need to do is to input a destination.
32.Why does Eldon Musk leave his position?
A.To create safer AI.
B.To build powerful Internet.
C.To develop social communication.
D.To avoid a possible conflict with Tesla.
33.What is the Eldon Musk's attitude towards the AI?
A.Ambiguous.
B.Supportive.
C.Negative.
D.Sympathetic.
34.What does the underlined word “malicious” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Advanced.
B.Unpopular.
C.Poisonous.
D.Traditional.
35.What can we infer from Eton Goodbye's comments?
A.Level 5 autonomy is impossible.
B.The rumors about Tesla is meaningless.
C.He has no confidence in Open AI.
D.Level 5 autonomy could set human drivers free.

I'm writing to tell you a piece of urgent information. I picked up a passport last Sunday in the subway station when I was taking a ride home. There was nobody around when I found it on a waiting bench. The owner of it is Steven who comes from England. I think he must be feeling anxious about the passport, but I have no idea how to return it to him.
So I need your help. I wish you could post a notice on your newspaper to tell him about the missing passport, so that he can get it back. I would appreciate it if you could do me the favor.
I'm looking forward to your reply.

Dan Buettner has studied five places around the world where residents are famed for their longevity: Okinawa in Japan, Nicoya in Costa Rica, Icaria in Greece, Loma Linda in California and Sardinia in Italy.
People living in these so-called “blue zones” have certain factors in common—social support networks, daily exercise habits and a plant-based diet, for starters. But they share another unexpected commonality. In each community, people are gardening well into old age—their 80s, 90s and beyond.
Could nurturing your green thumb help you live to 100?
It is well-known that an outdoor lifestyle with moderate physical activity is linked to longer life, and gardening is an easy way to accomplish both. “If you garden, you're getting some low-intensity physical activity most days, and you tend to work routinely,” says Buettner.
He says there is evidence that gardeners live longer and are less stressed. A variety of studies confirm this, pointing to both the physical and mental health benefits of gardening.
If gardening is good, is farming even better? Many of the lifestyle factors associated with longevity—such as living in the country and getting lots of exercise—apply to farmers as well.
Some evidence suggests that farming is one of the healthiest occupations. However, neither farming nor gardening will ultimately guarantee a longer lifespan(寿命). But some of the lifestyle factors associated with both—namely going outside, engaging in light physical activity and eating a healthy plant-based diet—just might.
(B)24. What do the long-lived people in the “blue zones” share?
A. They all live well beyond 90.
B. They keep on gardening.
C. They only eat vegetables.
D. They are very sociable.
【解析】B。 从第二段最后一句“In each community, people are gardening well into old age—their 80s, 90s and beyond.”可知A错误、B正确,C太绝对,D文章未提及。
(C)25. How does gardening possibly help live a longer life?
A. By getting people working outside occasionally.
B. By getting people involved in creative projects.
C. By providing some appropriate physical activity.
D. By supporting effective social networks.
【解析】根据第四段第一句可知C正确,B未提及,A选项的occasionally不正确,D选项是对文中提到的social support networks的误解。
(D)26. What does the author conclude in the last paragraph?
A. Farming will get more popular.
B. Farming and gardening can ensure longevity.
C. There is no connection between longevity and occupation.
D. Physical activity and healthy eating count.

(B)27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Secrets of Longevity
B. Gardening Could Help You Live to 100
C. Gardening and Farming
D. The Benefits of Gardening
【解析】从全文来看,文章大意讲的就是从事园艺对长寿有一定的好处,B正确。选项A只提了长寿,没有涉及园艺,选项C未涉及长寿,选项D范围过广。

Almost every day we come across situations where we have to make decisions one way or another. Choice, we are given to believe, is a right. But for a good many people in the world, in rich and poor countries, choice is a luxury, something wonderful but hard to get, not a right. And for those who think they are exercising their right to make choices, the whole system is merely an illusion(幻觉), a false idea created by companies and advertisers, hoping to sell their products.
The endless choice gives birth to anxiety in people's lives. Buying something as basic as a coffee pot is not exactly simple. Easy access to a wide range of everyday goods leads to a sense of powerlessness in many people, ending in the shopper giving up and walking away, or just buying an unsuitable item that is not really wanted. Recent studies have shown that many electrical goods bought in almost every family are not really needed. More difficult decision-making is then either avoided or trusted into the hands of the professionals, lifestyle instructors, or advisors.
It is not just the availability of the goods that is the problem, but the speed with which new types of products come on the market. Advances in design and production help quicken the process. Products also need to have a short lifespan so that the public can be persuaded to replace them within a short time. The typical example is computers, which are almost out-of-date once they are bought. This indeed makes selection a problem. Gone are the days when one could just walk with ease into a shop and buy one thing; no choice, no anxiety.
(A)28. What does the author try to argue in the first paragraph?
A. The practice of choice is difficult.
B. Choice is a born right.
C. It's easy to make choices.
D. Companies offer good shopping decisions.
【解析】 从第一段中“But for a good many people in the world, in rich and poor countries, choice is a luxury, something wonderful but hard to get, not a right.”可归纳出答案为A。
(B)29. Which of the following is most likely to cause anxiety?
A. Easy access to everyday goods.
B. Too many choices.
C. Misleading advertisements.
D. Professional shopping advice.
【解析】从第二段第一句可知无止境的选择范围导致人们在做出选择时很焦虑,也就是说选择的范围太大。A选项是说很容易买到东西,而不是选择范围广。
(A)30. The example of computers is used to prove that________.
A. updated products flood the market
B. high-tech products are of poor quality
C. everyday goods need to be replaced
D. advanced products are in demand
【解析】电脑的例子出现在最后一段,本段topic sentence 是第一句话“It is not just the availability of the goods that is the problem, but the speed with which new types of products come on the market.”是说新型产品不断冲击市场,故选A。
(C)31. What is this passage mainly about?
A. The opinions on people's right.
B. The problems of the availability of daily goods.
C. The helplessness in purchasing decisions.
D. The variety of choices in modern society.
【解析】纵观全文及最后一句话“Gone are the days when one could just walk with ease into a shop and buy one thing; no choice, no anxiety.”可以知道本文主要讲述人们在购物时因为选择太多而无法简简单单地进行选择的现状。

Vertebrates(脊椎动物), human beings included, are constantly changing their skin—producing new layers of it as they slough__off old cells. Understanding this process of regeneration would help the treatment of skin diseases and injuries such as burns. This week, a group of researchers led by Kenneth Poss of Duke University Medical Centre, in North Carolina, have announced a colourful new technique that should enhance such understanding. They call it the “skinbow”.
Skinbows are themselves an adaptation of an approach called a “brainbow”,which was invented almost a decade ago, and is used to label nerve cells different colours. Brainbow technology permits someone with an appropriate microscope to trace the connections that lots of individual nerve cells make with one another in the brain of, say, a mouse.
Dr Poss's experimental animal is not a mammal but a fish: the zebra fish. Skinbow or brainbow, though, the basic procedure is the same. Genetic engineering is used to create lines of animals whose genomes(基因组)contain multiple copies of genes for proteins that glow under ultraviolet light(紫外线).These genes are controlled by DNA switches that are activated only in the appropriate tissue type—brain for brainbows, skin for skinbows. In the case of skinbows, some of the proteins glow red, some glow green and some glow blue.
At the moment Dr Poss thinks his microscopes can distinguish 70-80 such colours. Moreover, unlike brainbow technology, which requires that the animal be killed in order to see what is going on, a skinbow is visible from the outside. Regenerative processes can be followed over an extended period.
The researchers, for example, could observe in detail how a fish responds to injury. When they cut a fin from one of their charges, they were able to track cells moving to the site of the damage and helping to repair it. They also saw new cells rising from deeper layers of the skin to supplement those that had migrated to heal the injured fin. After two to three weeks, the fin had regrown completely.
The next stage will be to test how fish skin responds to diseases, and to drugs that might treat those diseases. In the fullness of time, the technology might be extended to look at skin regeneration in other species, mammals included. Even while restricted to fish, though, it is likely to produce useful insights into the process of regeneration—not to mention the possibility of a nice little sideline(副业) in designing aquaria(水族馆).
(A)32. Which of the following best explains “slough off” underlined in Paragraph 1?
A. Get rid of. B. Take advantage of.
C. Adapt to. D. Rule out.
【解析】根据前后句意可知,在脱落旧细胞时,不断地产生皮肤的新层。
(D)33. What can we know about the brainbow according to Paragraph 2?
A. It is a colorful nerve cell.
B. It was invented to trace the skinbow.
C. It can speed up the adaptation of the skinbow.
D. It helps detect connections between cells.
【解析】从第二段可推出答案。
(C)34. Where do the skinbow and the brainbow differ?
A. In their principles.
B. In their complexity.
C. In their continuity in observation.
D. In their practicality in reality.
【解析】第四段第二、三句告知了两者之间的区别。“Moreover, unlike brainbow technology, which requires that the animal be killed in order to see what is going on, a skinbow is visible from the outside. Regenerative processes can be followed over an extended period.”
(D)35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The process of skin regeneration.
B. The limitations of the skinbow.
C. The prediction of a promising career.
D. The possible applications of the skinbow.
Technology can help solve the problem of bad, absent teachers in poor-country schools
The UN's Millennium Development Goals included the ambition that by 2015 all the world's children would complete primary school. This has largely been achieved: nine out of ten children are now enrolled.36.__D__. Even though most of the world's children go to school, an awful lot of them learn pretty much nothing there. According to a recent World Bank study of seven sub-Saharan African countries, half of nine-year-olds cannot read a simple word and three-quarters cannot read a simple sentence.37.__A__. The same study found that only 7% of teachers had the minimum knowledge needed to teach reading and writing effectively. When classrooms were inspected to see whether a teacher was present, half the time the answer was no.
38.__B__. It seems to bring about bigger improvements in poor countries than in rich ones. Some of the scarce resources being spent on teachers could therefore be better spent on ed-tech. That does not mean dumping computers on schools in the hope that children will understand how to use them, a folly on which plenty of money has been wasted.39.__E__, that gets things right more often than the teachers do, that adjusts itself to the child's ability, that sends teachers clues about what they are supposed to be teaching and that allows the authorities to check on whether the teacher is in the classroom.
Technology is no panacea(灵丹妙药). Good traditional teachers are not outdated, and are never likely to be.40.__G__. But ed-tech can help greatly—by monitoring pupils and teachers alike, assisting the best teachers and, most importantly, making up for the failings of the worst.
A. The reason is terrible teaching
B. Several recent studies suggest ed-tech can help
C. Paying teachers more in the hope of employing better ones is not the answer
D. Regrettably, the figure is not as impressive as it sounds
E. Instead, it means providing schools with software that children can use without any help from an adult
F. Devices can be taken to where there is a connection to upload or download the necessary information
G. And authorities need to hold teachers to account
【解析】
hold sb. to account

By the latter half of the 19th century, manufacturing had become the cornerstone of American industry. But, in spite of their 61.__economic__ (economy) importance, factories were often run in a very disordered manner. For the most part, factory operations 62.__simply__ (simple) adopted “rule-of-thumb”(经验法则)operations. Basically, 63.__employees__ (employ) would learn how to do procedures from their more experienced colleagues on the job, 64.__copying__ (copy) methods and techniques born out of individual trial-and-error. It was not until F. W. Taylor, 65.__an__ engineer, began introducing his ideas about systematizing these processes in the early 1890s 66.__that__ this approach to factory management began to change.
Taylor was the pioneer of an approach that he would later name “scientific management”. He thought management should analyze each task performed in the factory rather than allowing workers to determine how to do the work for themselves. That way they could make sure that every step in the manufacturing process 67.__was__handled__ (handle) as efficiently as possible. Taylor also believed that management needed to be more scientific in 68.__their__ (they) handling of staffing issues. He felt that all workers should be carefully selected, properly trained to ensure that they perform their tasks competently. Most significantly, Taylor thought that workers should carry 69.__out__ instructions handed down by their managers. 70.__Although/Though/While__ in our modern world Taylor's ideas would be considered overly strict, at the time they helped to achieve much greater efficiency in industrial operations.

Recently, a lot of students in our school hashave fallen ill due to the bad weather. I
notice they don't ask doctors for help but triedtry medicines by themselves in order to
save time. Personally, I don't agree with them. First, it is not easiereasy for us students to
make a wise choosechoice of medicines to cure illness. For example, when having a cold,
most of us prefer to take antibiotics, which in fact is not necessary atin most cases. And
medicines have side effecteffects, which may pose a threat to us because we don't have the
enough knowledge of them. From I stand, I strongly suggest we talk to the doctor
afterbefore taking medicines. But healthy is more important than that. As a saying
goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

On a sad day for American music,Whitney Houston has been found dead in a LA hotel room at the age of 48. Whitney Houston was an American recording artist, actress, producer, and model. She won a total of 415 career awards in her career, making her the most-awarded female artist of all time. Houston was one of the world's best-selling musical artists, having sold over 170 million albums, singles, and videos worldwide. She first began singing in churches when she was a kid, and she later performed alongside her mother in nightclubs in the New York City area. It was around this time that she was discovered by the legendary producer Clive Davis, the owner of Arista Records. He signed Houston to a long-term recording deal, and the singer would go on to release seven studio albums and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which were sold at least half a million copies. Some of her most famous songs include Saving All My Love for You, Greatest Love of All,and So Emotional. She also starred in several movies, including The Bodyguard. Her hit song from that soundtrack, I Will Always Love You, became the best-selling song by a female artist in music history, and her popularity as an actor and a singer influenced many other African-American women, singers, and performers. Houston died the night before the Grammy Awards, but the cause of her death was not immediately known.

Secrets I Know (Random House Children’s Books, ages 3-7)
This tale written by Kallie George and pictured by Paola Zakimi follows a young girl and her little friend as they move from rain to sunshine, from pleasant loneliness to sweet friendship, and finally from adventures on earth to an exploration of the sky above. The colors of Zakimi’s pencil drawings are calming and George’s poetic text tells her story with simple language.
Pandora (Clarion Books, ages 3-7)
The award-winning author Victoria Turnbull tells the story of a little fox Pandora. Pandora lives alone. She makes herself a handsome home, but no one ever comes to visit. Then one day something falls from the sky -- a bird with a broken wing. Little by little, the bird helps Pandora feel less lonely. Turnbull’s watercolor and colored pencil drawings make this story of friendship and growth an atmospheric delight.
Prince and Pirate (G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Younger Readers, ages 5-8)
A different kind of friendship is described in this book, by Charlotte Gunnufson with pictures by Mike Lowery. Prince and Pirate are a pair of mismatched fish put into the same aquarium(水族馆). At first it seems that they’ll never learn to be friends. It’s only when both take pity on a frightened dogfish that they learn the benefits of cooperation, and soon all three fish become good friends.
The Giant Jumperee (Dinal Books, ages 3-5)
The story was written by the award-winning British author Julia Donaldson. When Rabbit hears a loud voice bellowing(吼叫)threateningly from inside a cave, he gathers Cat, Bear and Elephant to help him decide what to do. But it’s Mama Frog who fearlessly confronts(面对)the unknown creature. Helen Oxenbury’s soft watercolors create a beautiful countryside and her characterizations of the animals are impressive.

C. Paola Zakimi D. Charlotte Gunnufson
22. Which book tells a story about courage?

C. Prince and Pirate D. The Giant Jumperee

One evening last summer, when I asked my 17-year-old son, Ray, for help with dinner, his response surprised me, “What’s a colander(漏勺)?” he asked.
I could only blame myself. Nobody’s hands went in the sauce except my own. But that night, as I explained with a touch of panic that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I wondered what else I hadn’t prepared Ray for. I felt confident that I’d raised a self-reliant boy, as we all try to do. But could he boil water? Sew on a button? Wash his clothes without turning them pink? No, no and no. Suddenly it hit me: He’d be leaving the house in a year to attend college. No way was I going to set a spoiled prince into the world.
As parents, while we focus on our child’s confidence and character, we perhaps don’t always consider that we are also raising someone’s future roommate, boyfriend, husband, or father. I wanted to know that I’d raised a boy who would never ask the woman in his life, “What’s for dinner?” So I came up with a plan: I would offer Ray a private home economics course. I was delighted to find that he didn’t say no.
For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for toasting. Then he rolled out the piecrust(馅饼皮)and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven.
Three of my four grandparents were tailors, so Ray was genetically programmed to quickly master the basics, like mending a split seam or refastening a button. One day we covered Advanced Laundry, in which I taught him never to mix a red sweatshirt with white shirts or put sweaters in the dryer. I knew that he would rather have been shooting hoops in the driveway than learning to mend socks with his mother -- he tried to beg off sewing lessons, even though I insisted that one day, someone would find the sight of him fixing his own shirt very attractive -- but it couldn’t be denied that he was learning, and more than just housekeeping. “I appreciate more what you do as a mom,” he told me one day.
Ray now understands the finer points of cooking, and more important, he realizes there’s nothing masculine(男子气的)about being helpless. Not only can he make his own dinner, he can make it for his family, too. That’s what I call a man.
24. Hearing her son’s question, the author felt _______.
A. shocked B. angry C. disappointed D. calm
25. We can learn from the text that Ray ________.
A. made great progress in cooking
B. preferred sewing to cooking
C. was unwilling to take the course at first
D. always thought it attractive to do housework
26. The underlined part “more than just housekeeping” shows that Ray _______.
A. fell in love with housework B. did other work in the house
C. acknowledges the author’s efforts D. began to be more independent
27. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Are Women Programmed for Housework? B. Should Boys Be Involved in Housework?
C. I’m Proud I’ve Raised a Curious Son D. A Present for My Future Daughter-in-law

Many people may have watched the film “March of the Penguins”, which shows a real group of birds in Antarctica. Imagine a group of fat black and white birds walking in a line. Suddenly, one penguin loses his balance and falls on the ice. Every time penguins fall down, people laugh. The animals are cute!
People like the film very much. So much, in fact, that police in England think that it may be the reason behind a crime. A man went to a zoo in London and stole a baby penguin. Authorities think that the man stole the penguin after seeing the film and believe he wanted to give it away as a Christmas gift.
Michael Gauthier-Clerc, an expert studying penguins, thinks that many people like penguins but some people do not understand them. He told The New York Times newspaper, “People love the penguin’s colors, its way of standing straight upright and the way it walks.”
These things make penguins seem cute to people, but there are good reasons for all of these things. For example, penguins move from side to side when they walk and may seem to be out of balance. But Doctor Gauthier-Clerc says that the penguins waddle to save energy. The penguin’s colour also has a special purpose. It protects the penguins when they are swimming. From below, larger animals cannot see the penguin’s white underside because it looks the same as the bright sky or ice. And from above, other animals cannot see the penguin’s black back against the dark ocean floor.
The penguins’ colors protect them in nature. But scientists have found that some of these physical details also have an effect on humans. They make animals seem cute to people. Scientists believe that humans are very sensitive to things that are cute, such as human baby and even objects that may look like parts of a baby.
Recent studies show that cute images affect the brain in a special way. A study done at the University of Michigan tested young people’s reactions to images. It found that young people believed a message more if the message was joined by a cute picture. The researchers showed the young people two messages. One was a simple anti-smoking message. The other showed a cute animal telling them that smoking was bad. The conclusion turned out that the young people trusted the cute message more than the simple message.
28. In the film “March of the Penguins”, ________.
A. a baby penguin is stolen B. a penguin is sent out as a gift
C. penguins are cute and attractive D. penguins have a bad sense of balance
29. It can be inferred from the passage that _______ .
A. a walking penguin has more energy than a swimming one
B. a penguin walks in a funny way to prevent itself from falling
C. a shop selling baby products are likely to make more money
D. a website with cute pictures may attract more young visitors
30. Scientists have found that the penguins’ color can ________.
A. change at different places B. help them keep warm
C. make people have pity on them D. protect them from being hunted
31. The study carried out by the University of Michigan shows that _________.
A. cute messages mislead people
B. cuteness influences people’s judgment
C. humans react to anything that is cute
D. a simple message is more convincing than a cute message
D
When you search Google or use Amazon, you might assume the results you see are the same as those viewed by your friends, family and other Internet users. But you’d be wrong. Websites and social networks track your location and search history and make assumptions about your age, race, sex and political views. They then show ads they believe to be the most relevant, in order to maximize clicks, but personalize which results you see by eliminating what they think is irrelevant.
This is sold to the public as positive, making each web session relevant and interesting, yet it is leading researchers to fear this could widen divides between the North and South, rich and poor, and young and old. For example, in terms of wealth, if users are only ever shown particular products and job advertisements based on how much they earn or where they live, these users will never be given the opportunities to increase their wealth, or how much they spend on items.
Princeton University has created bots(自动程序), each with their own fake profiles. These bots have different fake ages and sexes, earn different levels of money, are virtually(虚拟地) based in various locations around the world and have different interests. By using these bots to scan and research the web, the researchers hope to create a picture of not only what each of them sees, but also what sites they are missing out on.
According to lead researcher, Arvind Narayanan, “Our goal is a web privacy census(普查)which will be a comprehensive map of who are collecting what information, what they are inferring from it, and who they are sharing it with. It is an important step in our final goal of figuring out how users are treated based on that information.”
Personalization also has its benefits. Shopping sites such as Amazon and eBay can scan a user’s search and purchase history to offer suggestions. This can help find similar, cheaper items or items that are more suited to their needs at a glance. It’s also possible to disable personalized ads and results. Google’s search engine lets you switch off personalization, for example.
Researchers from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona and Yahoo felt the issue was so potentially damaging, and they have also created a way to “burst the filter(过滤) bubble”. They believe that just because people have opposing views on certain topics it doesn’t mean they won’t share interests with others.
32. The underlined word “eliminating” in Paragraph 1 probably means “_______”.
A. decorating B. removing C. personalizing D. protecting
33. Princeton University created bots to ______.
A. explain why different websites are personalized
B. offer users some advice on how to protect privacy
C. assess how personalization is affecting Internet users
D. stress the advantages and disadvantages of personalization of websites
34. Which of the following websites have done something to cut off personalization?
A. Google and Yahoo B. eBay and Google
C. Amazon and eBay D. Amazon and Yahoo
35. What is this passage mainly about?
A. Different websites are doing something to offer quality service.
B. Personalized ads and search results could be creating different web pages.
C. Personalization of different sites will lead to users’ privacy being violated.
D. Personalization of shopping sites makes online shopping more convenient.

The modern competitive sport of weightlifting originated in 19th-century Europe and was included in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. 36 At that time, simple competitions were held to see who could lift the heaviest weight.
The first worldwide weightlifting championships were held in London in 1891. At that time, there were no female competitors. Today, the World Weightlifting Championships, organized by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), are held every year. 37 .
Weightlifting as an Olympic event got off to an unsmooth start. It was not held as a separate event in the first games held in 1896, but as a field event. 38 The sport returned to the Olympics again in 1904, this time as part of the athletics program. Not until 1920 did weightlifting make its real Olympic comeback. The 1920 Olympic Games, held in Antwerp, Belgium, marked weightlifting’s debut(首次露面)as a separate event. 39 Previously, weightlifters in the Olympics were all required to compete against each other, regardless of their size. One-hand lifting was dropped from the sport in 1928. Various weightlifting exercises were added and later removed over many years until 1972. 40 The 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney saw the introduction of the women’s competition, although the IWF has held the World Weightlifting Championships for women since 1987.
A. The 1940 and 1944 Games were canceled.
B. It is a sport in which barbells are lifted competitively.
C. The 1900 Games had no weightlifting presence at all.
D. The championships include 15 separate weight types for both men and women.
E. The 1972 Olympic Games finally presented the weightlifting program in its present form.
F. The sport, however, dates back to ancient civilizations including China, Egypt and Greece.
G. The Antwerp Games also introduced one-hand lifting and weight divisions to the new event.

A Chinese scientist, Mr. He Jiankui claimed that he has successfully created the world’s first genetically-edited babies. In a interview, Mr. He said he had edited the genetic substance, or DNA, of twin girls born a few weeks early. Though Mr He’s claim was immediately condemned by some scientists as unsafe and unethical, but he defended his work. He said the gene editing, that was to help protect the babies from their future infection of HIV, the virus responsible with AIDS, was perfectly safe. Many scientists working in genetics say he believe any experiments performing this way are dangerous.
In the United States and other country, this kind of gene editing is strictly banned. What scientists are worried about that such changes to a person’s DNA may harm his/her other genes and lead to deadly diseases.

Dear fellow students,
As you all know, our government is trying to make our city a National Civilized City. We hope we can also do our bits to help achieve this goal.
First of all, we should mind our language and be civilized speakers. Always remember to say “Please” and “Thanks” and don’t talk or laugh loudly in public. When seeing people in trouble, we might as well lend them a helping hand. In addition, be civilized pedestrians. We must obey traffic rules and never cross the streets when the traffic lights are red. Keeping our environment nice and clean is also advisable, which means we shouldn’t litter or spit in public places. Only by starting with the little things around us can we make a big difference to our city image.
Let’s take action now and make joint efforts to make our city more civilized.

Text 1
M: What did you cook? Chinese food?
W: Well, as you know, I was in Thailand last month, and I took a cooking class. So I prepared some of my favorite Japanese dishes.
Text 2
M: Sally says we should meet her in the park at noon. Then we’ll go to the museum together.
W: I thought we were meeting at the library.
Text 3
M: Have you read this book, Helen?
W: No. What is it about?
M: It’s about differences between men and women. I wouldn’t say it’s a scientific book, but it kept me laughing all the way through.
Text 4
M: Mary, did you go to that concert you wanted to see last weekend?
W: No, we’re going this Saturday. We’d planned to try that new restaurant but we couldn’t get a table. So we just went for a long walk in the park.
Text 5
W: Hi. Are you new here?
M: Yes, I am.
W: Is this your first year in college?
M: No, I’m an exchange student from Boston College. I studied for two years there.
Text 6
M: Guess what, Mom. I’ve got my driver’s license!
W: That’s great, honey! Congratulations!
M: Well, I guess I’ll go out driving now. See you later.
W: Wait a minute. There are still rules to follow. You always need to tell me where you’re going and who you’re going out with.
M: Okay, fine. I’m going to get ice cream with Alan tonight. And tomorrow, I’m taking the car because I need to go to band practice in the afternoon and to soccer practice in the evening.
Text 7
W: Can I help you?
M: Yes, my daughter bought this camera here for my wife’s birthday, but it doesn’t work, so I’d like to change it for another one.
W: I see. Let me have a look…well, we’ll be happy to change it for you, but I’m afraid we don’t have another pink one.
M: Oh? What will I do then?
W: Would you like to choose a different color? We do have this camera in black and orange.
M: My wife doesn’t like either of those colors.
W: If you want, we can order another camera just like this one. There wouldn’t be any extra charge for it.
M: That sounds fine. Would you please go ahead and do that?
W: We’d be very happy to. But it’ll take at least a week, maybe ten days. We’ll call you when it comes in.
M: Thank you very much.
W: You’re welcome.
Text 8
W: Jason, do you have the reports that I asked for?
M: I gave them to Brad to make copies. He should be back with them any minute
W: Ok, can you tell me a little bit about what you found about?
M: Sure. In general, I think that people are watching less TV than they used to. Average folks are spending more time in front of the computer.
W: And what are they doing exactly when they are online?
M: That’s the interesting thing. It used to be that people just surfed the Internet for specific information. But now people are spending more and more time updating their blogs or adding more personal information to their profiles on social networks.
W: Is it fair to say that people are paying more attention to online advertising that they used to?
M: Absolutely. And because people are spending more time doing the same kind of things for long periods of time, it is easier to focus our ads and target people’s specific interests.
W: Well, it sounds like you’ve done some good research, Jason. Oh, look, here comes Brad now.
Text 9
W: Welcome to this edition of Writers. Tonight, we have Steven Darcy with us. Congratulations on your book, “Life and Everything in Between”, Steven! It’s such a success.
M: Thank you.
W: This is your first attempt at poetry? Did you ever try it before? Did you take any classes in poetry?
M: Well, my only real experience was writing business plans. Other than that, I have zero experience where writing is concerned. I have always had a good grasp of English language thanks to my mom, who started me reading when I was very little.
W: What is the hardest thing about creating your work?
M: Definitely finding the perfect words to fit what I want to say. There’s always a word or two that I might still rewrite if given the chance.
W: Will there be more collections of poetry from Darcy?
M: There will be more of something, I suppose, but maybe not poetry. I really don’t see myself as a poet. Rather, I see what I wrote as a kind of writing that might inspire people in some way.
Text 10
Before we go on to look at the church, we’re going to spend a couple of hours here in the shopping center. So get out your wallet and credit card. Some of you might want some cash for shopping. There is a bank. It’s on the first floor. It’s next to the cookie shop.
When you spend all your money, you’ll want to have something to eat. If you want to have a proper meal, there’s a really good restaurant in the main square opposite the fountain. But if you want to spend more time shopping, and just want to have a quick snack, there are several places, but the best one is the snack bar just over there beside the lifts. As well as sandwiches you can get salads and cakes. It’s open now, but it does most of its business in the morning and at lunch time, so it closes at a quarter past two. It’s best to get there by about one o’clock anyway or there isn’t much choice.
Now, the last thing is very important. We’re meeting again at a quarter to three. If you go out of the center through the doors and turn left, you’ll see a large shop selling carpets. The bus will meet us outside the shop. The shop’s name is Whitmarch. Now, do you want to write that down? I’ll spell it for you. That’s W-H-I-T-M-A-R-C-H. OK? Now, have a good time and I’ll see you later.
