  Dear Florence,

We arrived in India last week, and the voyage was the worst experience of my entire life. I’m lucky to be alive!

The first part of the journey was terrible, because the ship hit bad weather almost as soon as we left Liverpool. But much, much worse was to come. Later, we were involved in a collision with another boat and we had to abandon ship!

We had been at sea for about two weeks and we were in the Mediterranean. There is now a canal between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea called the Suez Canal, which opened last year. Our boat stopped at Port Said, the Egyptian port at the entrance to the canal. I remember looking through the porthole of my cabin and wishing that I could go ashore and visit this fascinating place, but mummy had ordered that I was to stay in the cabin because I was feeling ill. “You must stay here for at least another two days.” I remember her saying. How wrong she would turn out to be! The ship left the port and headed towards the canal. I was alone in the cabin and I watched the port disappear into the distance. Suddenly there was a loud bang, followed by the most awful crunching(嘎吱的)sound, and the ship shook and turned slightly on its side.

There was an eerie silence for a moment, and then people started shouting. Mummy came running into the cabin and told me that we had collided with another boat. She took my hand and we ran along the deck towards the lifeboats. There was a lot of shouting and people were running everywhere, but the crew were all acting calmly, helping people into the lifeboats and telling people not to panic.

Well, clearly we survived, as did all the passengers and crew of the ship. The other boat wasn’t so lucky. It sank and several lives were lost.

I will write about the rest of the journey soon. Please give my love to Aunt Claire and Uncle Eric.

  Your loving cousin,

  Jane

Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about tea. People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake but many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread an give them to their children as sandwiches.

Tea remained scarce (稀少) and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century. During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.

At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea. Until then tea had been drunk without milk in it, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea taste like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk. Because she was such a great lady her friends thought they must copy everything she did, so they also drank their tea with milk in it. Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.

At first, tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening. No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess (公爵夫人) found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o’clock stopped her getting “a sinking feeling” as she called it. She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so, tea-time was born.

  A. it tasted like milk B. it tasted more pleasant

  A. a famous French lady B. the ancient Chinese C. the upper social class D. people in Holland

  C

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy and the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.

People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend (hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation. It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.

Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one become mixed up in their quarrels.

  65. People who are unhappy____.

  A. always consider things differently from others.

  B. usually are affected by the results of certain things

  C. usually misunderstand what others think or say

  D. always discover the unpleasant side of certain things

  66. The phrase “ sour the pleasure of society” most nearly means _____.

  A. have a good taste with social life B. make others unhappy

  C. tend to scold others openly D. enjoy the pleasure of life

  67. In this passage, the writer mainly _____.

  A. describes two types of people B. laughs at the unhappy people

  C. suggests the unhappy people should get rid of the habits of unhappiness

  D. tells people how to be happy in life

71 The first, and perhaps the most important, is whether to bury the body or cremate(火化) it.

Cremation is the act of burning the body until only the ashes are left. The ashes are placed in a container called an urn(骨灰盒). The urn is often put on display during the memorial service. 72 Or they may bury them in the earth, place them in a tomb or scatter them in a special place.

It is said that cremations were used in almost 35% of funerals in 2009. 73 And the cremation rate is expected to increase to almost 59% by 2025.

While cremation has grown in popularity, most families in the United States still choose to bury their loved ones.

After death, the person’s body is usually embalmed (进行防腐处理) to preserve it until the funeral is held. A traditional full service funeral usually includes a public viewing. This is called a wake. The body is placed in a special burial box called a coffin. 74 The service may include music and comments about the loved one by family members and friends. A religious leader may also talk about the person and offer spiritual comfort to the family. After the service, family members and friends go to the gravesite where the body is buried or placed in a tomb.

75 A traditional full service funeral averages about 6,000 dollars. Flowers, funeral cars and special burial requests can increase the cost to more than 10,000 dollars. Cremations usually cost thousands of dollars less.

  A. Then a memorial service is held.

  B. This was an 11% increase from 1999.

  C. American funerals can be quite costly.

  D. American families are in deep sorrow when a loved one dies.

  E. After the ceremony, the family may keep the ashes in their home.

  F. American families have several decisions to make when a loved one dies.

  G. More families choose cremations due to environmental protection, though they are more expensive.

Recently our English teacher organized a discussion about middle school students playing the game “QQ Farm”. QQ Farm is becoming very popular among middle school students. Some think it’s interesting and can help them reduce stress. Moreover, through growing and harvesting, they can learn something about farm and get the feeling of achievement. On the farm, they feel they are leading a comfortable life.

However, they shouldn’t get addicted to it since it takes up too much time which should be spent studying. Besides, it can also distract their attention from their studies and the real world, which, in turn, leads to bad performance. Moreover, they may come to take it for granted that they can get things without making much effort.

As far as I am concerned, it is just a game. We should just enjoy it when we are free. After all, what we should plan is our life in the real world.

  A

It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone.

The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品杂货),saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.

I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, and then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.

This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性) as a whole. People do not analyze every problem they meet. Sometimes they try to remember a solution from the last time they had a similar problem. They often accept the opinions or ideas of other people. Other times they begin to act without thinking. They try to find a solution by trial and error. However, when all these methods fail, the person with a problem has to start analyzing. There are six stages in analyzing a problem.

First the person must recognize that there is a problem. For example, Sam’s bicycle is broken, and he cannot ride it to class as he usually does. Sam must see that there is a problem with his bicycle.

Next the thinker must define the problem. Before Sam can repair his bicycle, he must find out the reason why it does not work. For instance, he must determine if the problem is with the gears, the brakes, or the frame. He must make his problem more specific.

Now the person must look for information that will make the problem clearer and lead to possible solutions. For instance, suppose Sam decided that his bike does not work because there is something wrong with the gear wheels. At this time, he can look in his bicycle repair book and read about gears. He can talk to his friends at the bike shop. He can look at his gears carefully.

After studying the problem, the person should have several suggestions for a possible solution. Take Sam as an illustration. His suggestions might be: put oil on the gear wheels; buy new gear wheels and replace the old ones; tighten or loosen the gear wheels.

Eventually one suggestion seems to be the solution to the problem. Sometimes the final idea comes very suddenly because the thinker suddenly sees something new or sees something in a new way. Sam, for example, suddenly sees that there is a piece of chewing gum between the gear wheels. He immediately realizes the solution to his problem: he must clean the gear wheels.

Finally the solution is tested. Sam cleans the gear wheels and finds that afterwards his bicycle works perfectly. In short, he has solved the problem.

In the US and Britain, the slogan around colleges was “Save water. Shower with a friend.” Now, Wuhan University has come up with another system for the campus bathhouse. It charges students for the amount of time in a shower. Before entering the bathhouse, students pay for the amount of time they want in the shower with cash or their student ID card. The clock starts ticking the minute the tape is turned on. It pauses when a button is pressed for soap. An integrated circuit(IC) card reader at each tap shows the time. No money, no water. The benefits of the new system can be seen with the old system, which charged 1 yuan for each person regardless of time in the shower. The university used about 320 tones of water daily under the old system, but only 160 tons now.

Many students use the new system but opinions on it are divided. Some students say it is bad because bathing had become a sort of race. Many people using it for the first time are not sure how long they need to shower. Some might be embarrassed if their time is up and they’re still covered in soap. They have to ask the bathhouse worker to help them buy extra time.

“It’s a flaw in the system that you can not buy extra time on the ID card,” said Ren, a freshman in Wuhan University. The university is also considering some students’ suggestions that they be allowed to pay after they’ve finished the shower. Not surprisingly, some are complaining about losing the hour shower. But many students say the move helps them develop a water-saving sense.

Without the time limits, most students tended to shower for 30 to an hour in the bathhouse.

Some even used the hot water to wash their clothes. “In my experience, 10-20 minutes is enough,” said Dai Zhihua, a third-year student who usually takes 8 minutes.

A similar system has been installed in other universities. Shanghai Normal University introduced it at its Fengxiang Campus in September. The bathing fee there is 0.2 yuan per minute. One male student responded by setting a record with a two-minute shower.

  41. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

  A. Students pay for the amount of time they want in the shower.

  B. The clock times all through while the student is bathing except when the bather paused for soap.

  C. If money runs out, there will be no water.

  D. Having finished bathing, the student has to pay for it.

  42. The underline word “flaw” (Paragraph3) most probably means______.

  A. perfection B. advantage C. pity D. fault

  43. Since the new system has performed, ______ of water can be saved.

  A. a quarter B. one third C. one half D. two thirds

  44. It can be inferred from the passage that______.

  A. the new operation can solve the water crisis.

  B. The new operation can raise students’ environmental awareness.

  C. a similar operation has been set in other universities.

  D. The university has saved a lot of water by using the new system.

  45. In which column can you find this passage?

  A. People. B. Society. C. Campus Life. D. Lifestyle.

Advertising can be a service to customers. This is true when advertisements give reliable information about the goods advertised. Such information is needed if the customer is to make a sensible choice when he buys something. It is useful in that it lets him know of the kinds of goods in the shops. Printed advertisements do this job best. Customers can collect them and compare them. They can be taken along to the shops and their statements can be checked against and actual goods in the shops.

Some advertisements are not very useful to the customers. Instead of helping the customer to satisfy his real needs, they set out to make him want things. They set out to create a need. These advertisements make us believe that what they advertise will make us cleverer, prettier, more handsome, if only we use it. 读写任务:

  The Use of Advertisements

Advertisements can be useful when it provides customers with reliable information, while some advertisements are produced only to persuade customer to buy what they don’t need.

Nowadays we can see advertisements everywhere, such as on TV, in the newspapers, on the Internet and so on. Nobody can avoid being influenced by them. Why is advertising so popular? Undoubtedly, it is the man who shouts the loudest that attracts attention in violent competition and therefore well-established businesses spend much money in advertising.

Some people like advertisements because they can get the latest and detailed information needed more conveniently through them. Moreover, some people enjoy the stories and ideas in the ads. However, some hate them for the reason that some false advertisements mislead customers by using part of the truth to suggest something false. Worse still, by using the famous stars for advertising, it makes the prices much higher.

In my opinion, the advertisement is a necessity in modern society. Towards it, a correct attitude should be held: let advertisements serve our life, but never easily believe them.

When my daughter, Sophie, was admitted to a college we were very happy, but a little worried about becoming empty nesters. I knew I had to do something to help myself adapt, starting with the summer before she left.

Sophie had a pack of colorful T-shirts. I knew she wouldn’t wear them any more, so I decided to make a quilt out of them for her bed at college. It focused my energy, and also let me relive some memories. I tried to work on the quilt when Sophie wasn’t at home----which turned out to be often. She was very busy with her friends. Even when she was around, her door was shut more than usual. I felt a bit hurt. After all, we didn’t have much time together before she went to college, I was already missing her, and she hadn’t ever left yet.

When we arrived at the college, a wave of emotion flooded me. I tried to hold it back, but Sophie saw it in my face. She took a big red book from her bag. “I made this for you, Mom,” she said. Then I knew why she had been staying behind a closed door that summer. It was an album of photographs documenting the life of our family over the last 17 years.

I broke into tears. Some of it was sadness at having to let her go, but some of it was joy. I knew that our connection was more powerful than ever, and that we’d always be connected by the strongest of threads, the love that went into every stitch of her quilt and every photo of my album.

In Sophie’s dormitory I unfolded the quilt on her bed. For a moment she was speechless. Then she threw her arms around me. “Mom, I love you,” she said. One of her new friends was calling her outside. Sophie turned, and I let her go.

  56. What do we learn about Sophie from the passage?

  A. She did not understand how her mother felt about her leaving.

  B. She had few friends, and kept to herself at home that summer.

  C. She made a photo album to show her love.

  D. She liked her colorful T-shirts very much.

  57. Why did the author feel hurt, according to the second paragraph?

  A. Because Sophie was not interested in what she was doing.

  B. Because Sophie had little time for her.

  C. Because Sophie was going to leave home for a long time.

  D. Because Sophie did not help her to make the quilt.

  58. How did the author feel when they arrived at the college?

  A. She felt worried. B. She felt nervous.

  C. She was sorry to be leaving her daughter. D. She missed her daughter very much.

  59. Why did the author finally let her daughter go?

  A. She realized that her daughter had to go to college by herself.

  B. She realized that the love between them would never be cut off.

  C. Sophie’s present had made her forget her sorrow.

  D. Sophie’s new friends were calling her outside the dormitory.

Beliefs form a big part of our lives. Successful people have always believed that they can be and will be successful in their lives, such as Michael Phelps. Many of us have seen Michael Phelps win 8 gold medals in a single Olympic Games. That has created a history for himself. Many people have admired his success and the first reaction in their mind will be, “Wow, how I wish I could be like him!” Have you ever wondered what brought him success?

In fact, anyone can achieve what they have wanted to achieve. It is about beliefs. Everyone is a born winner. It is this belief that drives an individual to be successful in his or her own field. All successful individuals have strong beliefs and it is one of the bases for their success. If we start to believe in ourselves, the things that we can achieve will definitely give us a pleasant surprise.

Other than having a strong belief, it is the attitude that drives the individual to create their own history. The devotion towards themselves and the drive must also be present. Imagine having a strong belief in oneself and having a poor attitude towards life. Then how would that individual turn out to be? One’s attitude comprises the drive, the devotion and the desire to achieve his goals. If one has strong beliefs about the goals that he can achieve and he displays good attitudes towards them, it would be no surprise to anyone that he will be able to achieve his goals.

Start believing in yourself and you will achieve your goals and with the right positive attitude, you will definitely be able to create the miracle that you have always dreamt of.

Plastics are considered one of the most serious pollutants causing environmental problems. The garbage containing plastics end up in the waterways that eventually flow into the oceans. Accumulation (聚集)of plastic in the ocean endangers marine life and pollutes the water.

Does a plastic continent exist? Yes, a plastic continent does exist and was discovered by Captain Charles Moore a decade ago. The plastic continent is twice the size of Britain and it is the region between the Hawaii Islands and California in the central Pacific Ocean.

One of the causes of the lack of marine life in this region is due to pollution and pollutants are none other than plastics. Captain Charles Moore believes plastic waste started accumulating in the 1950s.

The plastic continent is the man-made continent of floating plastic waste. The fisher men and the sailors have avoided this region for years. The reasons are:

  1. There are no fish here because of the lack of nutrients.

  2. The zone also lacks the wind that is essential for sailing.

To do research on the ocean pollution, Captain Moore founded Algalita Marine Research Foundation. Other organizations such as Greenpeace supported his cause. The reports of The United Nations Environment Program show that millions of seabirds and marine animals are dying due to the invasion(入侵)of plastics. The waste plastics can be recycled, but in fact they are being thrown into the oceans. The marine animals mistake these for food and eat them. This leads to their death that affects the marine food chain.

To save the oceans from the plastic continent you need to reduce the use of plastics, reuse plastic bags and recycle plastics.

  72. What can we learn from the first paragraph?

  A. A plastic continent does exist in the Pacific Ocean

  B. Endangered marine life is well protected.

  C. Plastics are one of the main causes of water pollution.

  D. Plastics should be forbidden in people’s daily life.

  73. What is the direct influence of the plastic continent?

  A. Local fishermen have to fish in other areas.

  B. The water becomes shallow and fish have to move away.

  C. The wind is too strong there and it makes sailing more difficult.

  D. It makes people realize the importance of protecting the environment.

  74. It is implied that the work of plastic recycling proves to be ______.

  A. effective B. expensive C. a difficult task D. not good enough

  75. What can we learn from the passage?

  A. Many marine animals are dying due to the broken marine food chain.

  B. Captain Moore founded Greenpeace to do research on the ocean pollution.

  C. The marine animals have no choice but to eat plastics for lack of food.

  D. There are three ways to prevent the oceans from becoming a plastic continent.
