  Chinese Emoji (表情符号)Circles Globe

“Funny”, a made-in-China emoji, seems to have recently moved beyond China. Now, it is more than an emoji, but a cultural expansion.

  l Reaching Global Markets

A series of “funny” emoji-based bolsters (抱枕) have attracted the attention of Japanese customers. Even if one bolster is more than three times as expensive as in China, it doesn’t kill their desires to buy it.One Japanese customer Miki said, “They are just so cute and I bought three bolsters at one time for my family. And every time I see them, my mood just brightens suddenly.”

A Japanese netizen Kiro Kara said, “I think the emoji implies very complicated meanings. My dad will send it when he doesn’t agree with someone but he has to say something and behave politely.”

l Addition to Domestic Social Media

Compared with Japanese impressions of the “funny” emoji, Chinese netizens prefer to use the emoji to tease one another on social media.

One commonly seen online comment is, “We strongly suggest stopping the usage of the emoji. Because every time other people send me the emoji, I feel very uncomfortable and consider myself as a fool.”

Regarded as the most popular emoji, the “funny” emoji has received much attention since its release in 2013. In fact, the “funny” emoji is the updated version of its original one; “funny” has a smiley mouth, two eyebrows and a naughty look. All these characteristics present users a sense of satire (讽刺).

  l In Everyday Use Abroad

It’s not the first time the Chinese emoji takes the world stage. Earlier this year, one emoji from the Chinese basketball celebrity Yao Ming has been spread through the Middle East region. In a city in southern Egypt, Yao’s smiling emoji has appeared frequently in local traffic signs to remind people the road ahead is one-way. Many locals do not know Yao Ming but are familiar with his emoji and nickname “Chinese Funny Face”.

As a new online language, emojis have become a necessary part of people’s daily life, helping people express their views in a more vivid and precise way. Also, it can help foreigners learn about Chinese culture. But how to properly use “the fifth innovation in China” without hurting others and turn them into commercial advantages still need answers.

  21. Why do the bolsters attract Miki’s attention?

  A. They are inexpensive. B. They help reach an agreement.

  C. They help brighten the mood. D. They are helpful to express desire.

  22. Emojisare so popular worldwide mainly because people use them to ______.

  A. express their views more vividly B. present their sense of satire directly

  C. imply very complicated meanings properly D. tease one another on social media purposely

  23. The main purpose of the text is to ______.

  A. promote the emoji worldwide B. teachus how to use the emoji

  C. explain the meaning the emoji D. show us the popularity of the emoji

When school started on that warm August day, I threw myself into everything I did, including playing volleyball. I decided to become beautiful, or at the very least, skinny. I stopped eating completely. Soon I began losing weight, which thrilled me, and I even grew to love the tiredness and lightheadedness that came with my poor diet, for those feelings meant that I was winning.

As the season progressed, things had become tense between my head volleyball coach, Coach Smith, and me. She felt that something was wrong with my health. She talked with me about my eating and was angry that I wouldn’t listen to her when she tried to make me eat. She tried to persuade me in a determined way and so we fought constantly. Then my hunger started to affect my performance. I was so tired that practice and games were becoming a struggle. One afternoon, with hurt in her eyes, Coach Smith asked me what I had eaten and I told her nothing yet, but I was going to. She looked at me, disappointment in her eyes, knowing she couldn’t make me stop, and walked away.

A couple of weeks later I attended a formal dinner for our volleyball team. I stood there as my coach managed to say something nice about me. I realized then that I had ruined my senior year by being disrespectful, and I had probably ruined hers as well. So that evening I wrote her a letter apologizing and thanking her.

Then one Saturday, as I was reading in the library, I felt someone gently take my arm and say softly, “Lynn Jones, how are you doing?” I looked up and saw the familiar face. “Thanks for the letter,” she said. “It meant a lot.”

When I think of a coach, I think of someone above me, someone who gives instruction—not a friend. But Coach Smith is different, and, like any other good friend, she dealt with my problem in a determined way even when I hated her for it at that time. I didn’t deserve her kindness, but she gave it anyway. I will forever be grateful for her help, and now for her friendship.

  24. When the author ate a poor diet and had a sense of tiredness, she felt ______.

  A. stupid B. proud C. funny D. nervous

  25. The author fought with Coach Smith because ______.

  A. she refused to go on a diet B. she caused failure of her team

  C. she changed the training course D. she kept her idea of losing weight

  26. Why did the author write a letter to Coach Smith?

  A. She felt sorry for eating too little food.

  B. She decided to improve her performance.

  C. She was grateful for Smith’s care for her health.

  D. She wanted to build a close relationship with Smith.

  27. What is the best title for the passage?

  A. Unexpected Friendship B. A Fight with My Coach

  C. A Strict Volleyball Coach D. My Way of Losing Weight

  C

For anyone who is determined to be a fashion(时尚) designer, it is not enough to have succeeded in college. The real test is whether they can.survive, and become established during their early 20s, making a name for themselves in the real world where business skills can be as important as talent and creativity.

Fashion is a hard business. There is a continuous amount of stress because work is at a constant and extremely fast speed to prepare for the next season's collections. It is extremely competitive and there is the constant need to make attractive advertisements of the latest fashion in newspapers and magazines. It also requires continual freshness because the appetite for new ideas is hard to satisfy."We try to warn people before they come to us about how tough it is." says Lydia Kemeny, the Head of Fashion at St. Martin's School of Art in London. "And we point out that drive and determination are absolutely necessary."

This may seem far removed from the popular opinions of fashionable young people spending their time designing pretty dresses. That may well be what they do in their first year of study but a good college won't be slow in introducing students to commercial realities."We don't walk our foot on the blossoming (绽放的)flower of creativity but in the second year we start introducing the restrictions of price, producing ability, marketing and so on."

Almost all fashion design is done to a brief. It is not a form of self-expression as such, although there is certainly room for imagination and creativity. Most young designers are going to end up as employees of a producer or a fashion house and they still need to be able to work within the characteristic style of their employer. Even those students who are most modern in their own taste of clothes may need to adapt to produce designs which are right for the mainstream of market. They also have to be able to work at both the expensive arid the cheap end of the market and the challenge to produce good design inexpensively may well be demanding.

28.Which of the following is mainly discussed in the passage?

A.Talent in fashion. B.Good marks at college.

C.Ability to create new designs. D.Business skills in fashion industry.

29.What can we learn from the second paragraph?

A.Fashion designers are highly motivated and really determined.

B.Good preparations for the next season can reduce stress.

C.Consumers' appetite for new ideas keeps changing.

  D.Advertisement business is very competitive.

30.How does St.Martin's School of Art train her students of fashion?

A.To encourage the new students to design freely with imagination.

B.To require students to develop their creativity in their designing.

C.To demand students to make pretty dresses for companies.

D.To offer commercial courses for the new students.

31.What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph 3 refer to?

  A.Lydia Kemeny's opinion. B.The competitive business world.

C.The warning to the young designers. D.The real situation in fashion industry.

  D

There is no doubt eCommerce is growing, and it will continue to grow. However, physical stores would not die as a result of the rise of eCommerce, at least not in the near future. The idea that eCommerce is taking over physical stores has already misguided many people. Physical stores are far from vanishing, and there are some solid reasons for it.

The projections for online spending is optimistic with 0 billion expected to be spent in the coming three years, yet we are also expecting 0 billion in spending at physical stores in the same duration. Do you still think that physical-store shopping is too small to sustain the eCommerce blow?

Even though consumers are staying away from physical stores that follow older concepts, yet we are seeing the rise of fresh concept stores all around the US. We are seeing innovative and attractive success stories of physical stores, ranging from clothes stores to restaurants to health spas. It would be easy to assume that this trend will continue.

Indeed, many shopping malls are dying, yet there are still those shopping centers that are performing well. You can see this for yourself by visiting shopping malls near you. What I want to emphasize here is that not all shopping centers are made equal, just like not all eCommerce retailers are made equal. Both shopping malls and eCommerce sites can lose business if they fail to maintain productivity through improvements and innovations. When you visit shopping centers that are serious about their business, you would see their shops and parking lots packed.

On the other hand, even e-tailers like Amazon have experimented with pop-up shopping concepts. It is important to bear in mind that consumers prefer face-to-face interactions instead of online interactions during shopping, meaning that physical stores are going to stay there.

Still, eCommerce retailers are seeing all of their excitement disappear as they settle the sales tax problem associated with e-tailing. As of now, five states of America have already imposed sales tax on purchases through eCommerce sites, and e-tailers in those states have already witnessed 6 to 12 percent decrease in sales.

This reinforces the fact that physical stores are here to stay, and if you are still undervaluing their growth, you are omitting a huge chunk of the retail representation.

  32. The underlined word "projections" in Paragraph 2 probably means____.

  A. intentions B. assessments C. performances D. predictions

  33. What can we infer from the passage?

  A. E-tailers are more creative businesses.

  B. Fresh concepts help build good business.

  C. Fewer consumers will visit physical stores.

  D. Physical stores can’t stand the blow of eCommerce.

  34. What is the best title for this passage?

  A. Is Offline Spending Greater Than Online Spending?

  B. Online Stores V.S. Physical Stores—What’s the Difference?

  C. Will Physical Stores replace eCommerce in the Near Future?

  D. Does eCommerce Success Mean Physical Stores Will Disappear?

  35. Which of the following shows the development of the passage?

  Dear Jim,

①It’s great to hear from you. It’s really a good idea for us to share our favourite books with each other.

② My favourite book is A Tree Grows in Brooklynwritten by Betty Smith. ③It tells the story of Francie Nolan, an adolescent girl who grows up in a poor immigrant family in Brooklyn. Her mother favors her little brother, while his father is always drunk. Life is hard for her. However, reading brings her great pleasure. Thanks to the books, she finds a way to endurepoverty and loneliness, surviving all the difficulties and challenges.

④What I’ve learned from this book is that though life is tough sometimes, as long as we’re determined to rise above difficult circumstances, life can be hopeful and colorful. This book encourages me to keep optimistic about life and gives me courage to face difficulties. It certainly deserves to read.

  W:Oh,yeah.Now I remember.You were standing all alone...uh,oh,I mean...I mean,you...you know.We started talking about school and stuff.Uh,how did you know I lived here?

M:Well,I just live around the corner, and I asked Gary if he knew how I could contact you,and...

  W:And?

M:Well,I was just wondering if you’d like to go out this Thursday night.Well, there’s this realgreat movie playing downtown at the theatre, and I thought...well.well,we can’t use my carbecause I was in an accident with this wild animal driving this BMW,so I’ve already checked the bus schedule,and...

  W:Uh?hem Well,David.Oh yeah.Doug.I’m sorry,but I have to work that evening.

W:What part of the paper are you reading?

  M:Travel.

W:Are you thinking about our vacation already?

M:Yes,it’s not so far away.I’ve been looking at some of these ads.

W:Why don’t we just go to the same place we went to last year?

M:I won’t stay at that hotel again. There wasn’t enough to do.

W:Do you have a better idea for this year?

M:Yes,I do.Look at this ad.It looks like a good vacation to me.

W:“Three weeks.” “Ten exciting ports.”“Use the ship as your hotel.” How much does it cost?

M:We’d have to call the travel office to get the price.

W:It must be expensive if they don’t give the price in the ad.And besides,I’d rather we stayed in one place.

M:I don’t want to sit on the same beach and eat the same food and look at the same walls every day for three or four weeks.

W:You know the doctor said you shouldn’t try to do too much.

M:He didn’t say that I had to sit in the same chair all day long.

  (Text 10)

The word “pub”is the short form for“public house”in Great Britain. It is supposed to be the Englishmen’s favorite meeting place, where they can get together with friends over a pint of beer and talk about football, horse racing,or business.Pubs are usually open from 11 a.m. to midnight. You may notice that the pub is the Englishmen’s meeting place. It is not quite respectable for a woman to go into a pub alone. She must have a man to go with her.Perhaps that’s partly the reason why pubs depress me—they are intended mainly to provide for male interests. Most Englishmen have their favorite local pubs, where they can escape from the pressure of family life or work, and if they are lucky they tell their troubles to a pretty bar-girl.Indeed,many men dream of retiring from their 9 to 5 jobs and buying a little country pub, where they imagine they always be the host of a week-long party.
