The literal meaning of philosophy is “love of wisdom”. But this meaning does not tell us very much. Unlike the other disciplines, philosophy cannot be defined by what you study, because it is actually unlimited. Anything can be the subject matter of philosophy: history, law, language, literature, mathematics, and in fact, the other academic disciplines are directly related to philosophy. For this reason you get a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph. D.) in biochemistry, or computer science, or psychology.
Two broad sub-fields of philosophy are logic and the history of philosophy. Logic is the science of argument and critical thinking. It provides sound methods for distinguishing good from bad reasoning. The history of philosophy involves the study of major philosophers and periods in the development of philosophy.
Of what use is philosophy? First it is useful in educational advancement. It is necessary for understanding other disciplines. Only philosophy questions the nature of the concepts used in a discipline, and its relation to other disciplines. And through the study of philosophy, one develops sound methods of research and analysis that can be applied to any field.
There are a number of general uses of philosophy. It strengthens one’s ability to solve problems, to communicate, to organize ideas and issues, to persuade, and to take what is the most important from a large quantity of data. These general uses are of great benefit in the career field, not necessarily for obtaining one’s first job after graduation, but for preparing for positions of responsibility, management and leadership later on. It is very short-sighted after all, to take a course of studies only for the purpose of getting one’s first job. The useful skills developed through the study of philosophy have significant long-term benefits in career advancement. No other discipline systematically follows the ideals of wisdom, leadership, and capacity to resolve human conflict.
59. According to paragraph 1, philosophy can best be described as the study of ______.
A. social sciences B. natural sciences
C. both social and natural sciences D. the subject matter of politics
60. With the study of philosophy, you can ______.
A. become a great leader B. succeed in everything
C. find a good job soon after graduation
D. make progress in your career development
61. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Philosophy is an independent discipline.
B. Logic helps you to become a better thinker.
C. The study of philosophy brings you immediate benefits.
D. The meaning of philosophy is too limited to define.
62. From the passage, we can conclude ______.
A. not all the subjects have to do with philosophy
B. a person will get a Ph. D. if he/she studies philosophy
C. philosophy can be helpful for the study of any other subjects
D. philosophy is the only solution to all the problems in the world
C
The twenty-four horses dash around a racetrack. The thunder of their hooves (蹄) rings in the riders’ ears, nearly drowning out the cheering of the crowd. After three or four minutes of suspense, one horse crosses the finish line first, winning the Melbourne Cup and earning a place in history.
The horses that compete in the Melbourne Cup—one of the world’s most famous horse races—were fated to race. Bred for speed, these horses are the few that were singled out as having potential to become champions.
Preparing a racehorse to compete requires a team. A horse’s owner manages the team and decides which races to enter. A trainer determines the racehorse’s diet and exercise. Regular exercise makes a horse less likely to be injured, but overtraining tires the horse. A groomer (动物美容师) cares for the racehorse and reports any problems he discovers to the trainer. And of course, no horserace could be run without a rider. These riders train for long hours and travel constantly from one race to another. They need to make a strategy, adapt to changing conditions and communicate with their horse to guide it to victory.
Australia’s most famous horserace, the Melbourne Cup, is 3,200 meters of pure excitement. Each year 300 or 400 horses are nominated (提名), but only 24 can run. The competitors are chosen based on a number of factors, but winners of certain races qualify automatically.
Each racehorse receives a handicap—a certain weight it must carry to give each horse an equal chance of winning—two months before the race. Originally, horses that seemed likely to win were assigned larger handicaps. But the rules have changed, reducing the handicap for previous winners.
The first Melbourne Cup in 1861 drew a crowd of 4,000 spectators, and the race’s popularity has grown since then. Held on the first Tuesday of November, the cup has become a four-day festival with fine food and entertainment.
The Melbourne Cup began during a gold rush as a form of entertainment for the rich. Today it still attracts society’s upper class. They come dressed in their finest to enjoy the event in comfort.
But anyway it’s all about the race—the effort of horses and riders, the suspense and the thrill of victory.
63. What can be learned about the horses in the Melbourne Cup?
A. They are all winners of a certain race. B. They are raised and trained by joint effort.
C. They are chosen from ordinary horses. D. Their fates are determined by their trainers.
64. The racehorses are given handicaps so that _____.
A. they will weigh the same B. previous winners are unlikely to win

Role-Playing in Child Development
Playing is a key component in the learning process for virtually all of the children. There are various ways in which children play, but one of the most important is role-playing. This involves a child engaging in an activity during which he or she pretends to be another person.
Experts on child development believe that role-playing can increase the connections in children’s brains that help them learn. Language skills are some of the most important aspects of learning. When children role-play, they must work out steps that need to be taken to complete a task, and create plans to act out a story. These activities enable children to develop their oral language skills. They become able to organize others and to give directions.
Children’s social skills can also be developed. When engaged in group activities, children have different roles. Some are leaders while others are followers. At times, the children will disagree, so they must learn to negotiate and compromise with one another, and they must learn to apologize when they have strong arguments or disagreements as well. Children further learn about cooperation and sharing and, hopefully, begin to understand things from another person’s point of view.
Besides helping children learn some kinds of skills, role-playing fosters children’s imaginations and can therefore assume a number of forms. For example, boys may pretend to shave like their fathers or perform various tasks around their homes. Girls, meanwhile, often pretend to be mothers to do some daily tasks, particularly if it involves caring for young babies. Sometimes children may imagine belonging to a group of superheroes or imitate(模仿)real-life situations. They might dress up and assume different roles. Another example is the performing of stories they read in books, which is also very common when they role-play.
Another beneficial aspect of role-playing is that it can help children deal with certain actions that may cause them emotional(情感的) pain, such as the fear they face when going to school for the first time or making a visit to the doctor. If children role-play situations like these beforehand, the first that they experience when doing these actions in reality frequently lessons. For this reason, experts encourage parents to allow their children to role-play and even to take part in these activities to help their children master their fears.
Role-playing can benefit children in many ways. There is no activity for which young children are better prepared than fantasy play. Nothing is more dependable and risk-free, and the dangers are only pretend.
67. From the author’s description in Paragraph 4, we learn that children often ______. .
A. involve daily-life activities in groups
B. perform daily tasks instead of their parents
C. act out the activities that their parents do
D. change real-life situation when role-playing
68. The author believes that role-playing may help children ______. .
A. develop a better awareness of grammar
B. understand how to be both leaders and followers
C. improve creativity by using their imaginations
D. receive benefits from their emotional pain
69. The underlined word “master” in Paragraph 5 probably means ______. .
A. ignore B. confirm C. predict D. overcome
70. Which of the following shows the organization of the passage? ______.

Real estate recovery
China’s real estate industry has been an important item of news in newspapers or on the radio or television as the housing market continued to heat up in January.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics(NBS), more than half of the 70 surveyed cities experienced month-on-month rises in both new and existing home prices.
Favorable policies could be part of the driving force behind this upward trend, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Property prices took a downtown in 2014 with weak demand and a supply glut(供应过剩). There were 719 million square meters of unsold homes at the end of 2015, reported Xinhua. That amount of space is enough to house nearly 24 million people to live in, according to estimates from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
Policy makers made reducing the number of unsold homes one of their priorities this year and announced a slew of new measures to promote home sales.
Early last month, reductions to the minimum down payments for first -and second-time home buyers were announced. On Feb. 22, taxes on some property transactions were also cut back on. Both measures make it cheaper and easier for people to buy real estate.
These measures have implications not just for home buyers but also for society as a whole, according to Shenzhen Overseas Chinese News.
The housing price fluctuation(波动) affects people’s lives regardless of whether they’re
buying property or not.
If prices go down, related industries like construction and manufacturing will experience drops too. If prices go up, costs for expanding corporation and innovation will increase, limiting the funds available for recruitment, reported the newspaper.
The new measures encourage speculative(投机的) investment, warns YiXianrong, a professor of economics from Qingdao University, in an opinion piece for the Global Times.
“Those who aren’t in need of a home also invest in properties. They drive up the housing prices. As a result, people with real demand can no longer afford a home,” he wrote.

Actively involved in the charitable work, many western billionaires like Zuckerberg have won themselves much praise. Meanwhile, charity in China also enjoys a boom with the perfection of the relevant legal system.
Donors’ unselfishness will make it easier for those in need to access good facilities and resources, making their future change for the better and fostering their sense of positive outlooks. In addition, the receivers will experience a high level of love and care and learn the virtue of being grateful, which will drive them to take responsibility for repaying the society.
Given a chance for charity, I would like to work for the children in the remote areas. Born in the underdeveloped country areas, most of them have to drop out of school due to poverty, leaving their compulsory education uncompleted. Our funding will cover their tuition and living costs, helping their life to get back on track. (150 words)
