  第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每题2分,满分40分)

  阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

  A

There are desert plants which survive the dry season in the form of inactive seeds. There are also desert insects which survive as inactive larvae (幼虫). In addition, difficult as it is to believe, there are desert fish which can survive through years of drought (干旱) in the form of inactive eggs. These are the shrimps (虾) that live in the Mojave Desert, an extremely dry place in the southwest of the United States where shade temperatures of over 50℃ are often recorded.

The eggs of the Mojave shrimps look like grains of sand both in size and appearance. When enough spring rain falls to form a lake, once every two to five years, these eggs hatch. Then the water is soon filled with millions of tiny shrimps about a millimeter long which feed on tiny plant and animal organisms (有机物)which also grow in the temporary desert lake. Within a week, the shrimps grow from their original 1 millimeter to a length of about 1.5 centimeters.

Throughout the time that the shrimps are rapidly maturing, the water in the lake equally rapidly evaporates(蒸发). Therefore, for the shrimps it is a race against time. By the twelfth day, however, when they are about 3 centimeters long, hundreds of tiny eggs form on the underbodies of the females. Usually by this time, all that remains of the lake is a large, muddy patch of wet soil. On the 13th day, the shrimps lay their eggs in the mud. Then, having ensured that their species will survive, the shrimps die as the last of the water evaporates.

If enough rain falls the next year to form another lake, the eggs hatch, and once again the shrimps pass rapidly through their cycle of growth, adulthood, egg-laying, and death. Some years there is not enough rain to form a lake: in this case, the eggs will remain dormant for another year, or even longer if necessary.

  56. Which of the following is the MOST unique feature of Mojave shrimps?

  A. Their lives are brief. B. They feed on plant and animal organisms.

  C. Their eggs can survive years of drought. D. They lay their eggs in the mud.

  57. What does the underlined word “dormant” in the last paragraph most probably mean?

  A. Inactive. B. Sleeping. C. Safe. D. Dead.

  58. What can be inferred from the passage?

  A. Shrimps are the only species with a life cycle of 13 days.

  B. A species must be able to grow up quickly in order to survive.

  C. Appearance and size are the most important for life to survive in the desert.

  D. Some species develop a unique life pattern to survive in extremely hard condition.

  59. What is the passage mainly about?

  A. The life span of Mojave shrimps B. The survival of desert shrimps

  C. The creatures living in the Mojave desert D. The importance of water to life in the desert

Why do people feel so rushed? Part of this is a perception (认知) problem.Generally, people in rich countries have more free time than they used to.This is particularly true in Europe, but even in America free time has been inching up.Women's paid work has risen a lot over this period, but their time in unpaid work, like cooking and cleaning, has fallen even more significantly, thanks in part to dishwashers, washing machines and microwaves, and also to the fact that men shift themselves a little more around the house than they used to.

The problem, then, is less how much time people have than how they see it.Ever since a clock was first used at a workplace to record labor hours in the 18th century, time has been understood in relation to money.Once hours are financially quantified(量化), people worry more about wasting, but tend to save or use them more profitably. When economies grow and incomes rise, everyone's time becomes more valuable. And the more valuable something becomes, the rarer it seems.

Once seeing their time in terms of money, people often grow stingy with the former to maximize the latter.Workers who are paid by the hour volunteer less of their time and tend to feel more upset when they are not working.

The relationship between time, money and anxiety is something Gary Becker noticed in America's post-war boom years."If anything, time is used more carefully today than a century ago," he noted in 1965.He found that when people are paid more to work, they tend to work longer hours, because working becomes a more profitable use of time.So the rising value of work time puts pressure on all time.Leisure time starts to seem more stressful, as people are forced to use it wisely or not at all.

63.Women's time in unpaid work has fallen partly because ______.

A.men's ability to support a family has been improved

B.men's involvement in housework has increased

C.women's leisure time was taken up by heavy housework

D.women become more skilled at household equipment

64.From the second paragraph, we learn that ______.

A.labor hours were recorded with a clock B.people haven't realized the value of time

C.more work hours bring in more money D.The rise of incomes makes time less valuable

65.The underlined phrase grow stingy with can probably be replaced by "______".

A.refuses to delay B.intend to kill C.try to accumulate D.hesitate to spend

66.According to Gary Becker, what causes people feel anxious about time?

A.The wrong way of time being spent. B.People's willingness to work hard.

C.The increasing value of work time. D.More and more leisure time.

  D

Imagine you’ve had a fight with your best friend. It’s a stupid fight, something you will both get over. But right now you are upset. When you walk in the door, your mom asks what’s wrong. How are you mostly likely to respond?Have a long, comforting talk about it with her. Or head to the fridge for the ice cream. But can that really help you feel better — or just make you feel sickeningly full?

Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings instead of to satisfy hunger. We’ve all been there, finishing a whole bag of chips or eating cookie after cookie while preparing for a coming exam. But when done a lot — especially without realizing it — emotional eating can affect weight, health, and well-being.

One of the biggest beliefs about emotional eating is that it’s caused by negative feelings. Yes,people often turn to food when they’re stressed out, lonely, sad, anxious, or bored. Nevertheless, emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine’s Day or the celebration of a holiday feast. More often, though,it’s the countless little daily stresses that cause someone to seek comfort or relaxation in food.

We all have our own comfort foods. Amazingly, they may vary according to moods and sex. One study found that happy people seem to want to eat things like pizza, while sad people prefer ice cream and cookies. Bored people desire salty, fragile things, like chips. Girls go for chocolate and ice cream.

This brings up a curious question:Does no one take comfort in carrots and cabbages?Researchers are looking into that, too. What they’re finding is that high-fat foods, like ice cream, may activate certain chemicals in the body that create a sense of contentment and fulfillment, which may actually make you reach for these foods again when feeling upset.

We’re all emotional eaters to some extent. But for some people, emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious problems such as weight gain.

Managing emotional eating means finding other ways to deal with the situations and feelings that make someone turn to food. For example,do you come home from school each day and automatically head to the kitchen?Stop and ask yourself, “Am I really hungry?” Are you having difficulty concentrating? If these signs point to hunger, choose something light and healthy to take the edge off until dinner.

  67. The first two paragraphs are designed to _______.

  A. put forward the idea of emotional eating B. stress the importance of friendship

  C. explain the function of eating an ice cream D. offer advice on how to comfort an annoyed child

  68. People turn to emotional eating because _______.

  A. they benefit a lot from eating B. they have a strong desire for food

  C. they want to seek comfort or relaxation D. they suffer from weight problems

  69. Which of the following may not serve as comfort food?

  A. Chips. B. Carrots. C. Cookies. D. Pizzas.

  70. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?

  A. Eat whenever you can’t concentrate.

  B. It is natural to feel hungry after school.

  C. It’s hard to tell physical hunger from mental hunger.

  D. There are ways to break the cycle of emotional eating.

It’s amazing how we grow from careless kids to responsible teens. What happens in the course that makes us responsible now? It’s the seed that we sow in the beginning which grows and becomes a huge tree. As I sit here, silently thinking about my growth, I wonder over some questions which don’t have an answer but it’s because of such unanswerable situations that life has become a roller coaster ride.

As a kid, I used to read a lot of story books. In one particular book, I read a story of a bird. From then on, that has become an integral (必不可少的) part of my life. It described a male bird which takes a lot of pain to build a nest and the female bird takes shelter in it and nourishes the baby. When the bird learns to fly, the whole family flies off to a different place leaving behind the beautiful nest for other birds to grow their family in it. It made me wonder. How could they so easily sacrifice their house built with so much effort?

One night, when I was deep in sleep, I got this particular dream. I was walking miles on the endless road, totally isolated but lined with beautiful trees on either side. Fascinated by the greenery, I marched towards it only to end up deeper and deeper into the greenery. I happened to stop upon seeing something. It was a massive, wonderful house. I fell in love with that amazing part of art. Yeah, it was indeed a piece of art with every corner touched artistically and lovingly. I don’t know why I felt that it was done lovingly. Maybe because, things turn out to be beautiful only when we put our love into it — just like the food prepared by mom which tastes more delicious with her love.

I explored the house only to fall more in love with it. There was a sloping roof which matched with the greenery around; the large central open courtyard reminded me of the activities that might have taken place there which felt lively even now when it is completely deserted. The small water body that kept the house cool added to the beauty of the house — of course, it was all dried up now. It’s really wonderful how such things add life to the spaces which otherwise just become structures. Such liveliness and happening turns the house into a home. They say ‘THE HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS’, but now I began to feel it. This is where my heart belongs. This is what I’m destined to do.

When I woke up from the dream, I was clear about everything. I realized where that mile of walk was intending me to lead. I realized what message my dream wanted to convey me. And years later, when finally my turn of choosing my destination came, I simply closed my eyes, held that book in my hand, pressed it against my chest and relived the dream. When I opened my eyes, I was sure what to do. I decided to choose the road — less traveled. Yes, I took up architecture as my profession because this is what I am destined to do. I wanted to do the same thing that the male bird in the story did, to take pain in building a beautiful house and let others stay in it. This is my dream come true and the happiness that I gain now from this profession is indescribable.

  书面表达

  One possible version :

The fact that high school students are currently experiencing a sharp decline in health has aroused wide concern among parents, schools and experts. To have this problem solved, some people propose that PE be included as a subject in the College Entrance Examination.

I’m against the idea because it is by no means practical. Setting up standards for the exam alone may well be a hard task. It is far beyond our ability to manage such a nationwide exam in the sports field. However, good health is an essential foundation of learning. Only when one is in good health can he guarantee efficient learning.

Therefore, it is schools’ responsibility to help develop their students’ awareness of the importance of keeping fit. Moreover, schools should provide sufficient sports facilities for their students to have regular exercise.
