Here are two broad methods that people use to make choices. One method is to compare the options with each other and choose the best one. The other is to evaluate each option individually and then pick the one that is rated as the best. Experts are more likely to evaluate the options individually, while people with less expertise tend to compare the options.

Researches show that it is easier for people to evaluate the options when they are being compared. Imagine buying a new dictionary. You find out that a particular dictionary has 50,000 words in it. Is that a large number of entries. Suppose, though, that you find out that another dictionary only has 25,000 words in it. Now, you know that 50,000 words is a good number for a dictionary to have.

New research shows that when people compare options , they also get more confident in their judgments . To get participants in their studies in a mindset to make comparisons , researchers had people look at a complex picture and write down the similarities and differences between two halves of the picture . Other participants evaluated the picture without making comparisons . Previous work by these researchers shows that this technique reliably gets people to make comparisons in later tasks.

After that , participants were shown descriptions of three brands of cell phones ( labeled Brands A , B and C ) . They had a chance to study the descriptions. Later , they were shown fourteen of the characteristics they had seen and were asked whether those characteristics belonged to Brand B . With each response , participants were allowed to place a bet between 0 and 10 dollars based on how confident they were in their response . The higher the bet , the more confident the people were that they knew whether the characteristic belonged to Brand B . People who were put in a mindset to make comparisons were more confident in their judgments about the characteristics of the cell phones than people who did not make comparisons . Despite the difference in confidence , the people who made comparisons were not more accurate in their judgments than those who did not make comparisons .

This research suggests that we need to be careful when making decisions . On the one hand , we are quite likely to rely on comparing the options in order to make a choice . On the other hand , those comparisons will increase our feeling of confidence in the decision . So , we need to recognize that at least part of that confidence comes from the way the choice was made .

You hear it all over on a regular basis: the print industry is on its last leg. Newspapers are shutting down all over the country. Print publishing is becoming out of date. What is happening to libraries? Despite the digital age, libraries seem to be hanging on. 71 Here are just a few of the changes that you may have seen in your local library lately.

  Digitizing Historical Records

With Google, online scholarly journals, and Wikipedia, going to a library to do research is something that the younger generation will likely never experience. So what happens to all those old newspapers and historical records that you used to have to access at the library? 72 All records that the library used to host can now be hosted online via the computers in the library. It’s quick and easy to find the information that you’re looking for.

  Downloadable Books

Pretty much every library in the counter now allows card holders to check out downloadable eBooks and audio books online via their computer or mobile device. This has been a very important adaptation for public libraries to make, as many people now prefer to have their books on their smartphones and tablets. 73 In addition to portability, another great benefit of downloadable books is that you can now check out books from your library no matter where you are. Plus, most downloadable books are programmed to check themselves back in when they’re due. 74

  Self-Checkouts

You see them at grocery stores all the time, and now, many libraries are doing it too. 75 That includes the library. That’s why many public libraries have now added self-checkout lanes(通道)for visitors. This enables visitors to pick the books they want, then quickly scan the books and their library card to check them out without having to stand in line at the checkout desk.

Public libraries still have a lot of value today and hopefully, no matter what adaptations need to be made in the future, they won’t be lost to future generations.

A.These records are going digital too.

B.They have done a lot of adapting in recent years.

C.People want to get in and out of places as quickly as they can.

D.When researching for any topic, you don’t have to go to the library.

E.You never have to worry about paying fines for overdue books again.

F.This makes it easy to always have a book on hand no matter where you are.

G.With everything going digital, there is less and less of a need for paper these days.

  第二节(20分)

  One possible version:

A Social Experience in a Primary School

Last Friday, my monitor and I had an unforgettable social experience in Wen Yang Primary School.

Early in the morning, we arrived at the primary school with the books donated by our class, and we received a warm welcome. Without any delay, we gave the books to the students as gifts. They liked the books so much that many of them couldn’t wait to read them. Then the most exciting time came. Based on what we had prepared, I taught the students English while my monitor taught Chinese. His explanations about a famous Chinese Poem interested the students a lot.

Shortly after lunch, they walked us to the school gate and we waved each other goodbye there. It was really a great day for all of us.
