There' s something magical about a summer garden — flowers, trees and even vegetables produce a garden that is attractive. Of course,as humans,we experience life through our five senses — one of those being our sense of smell. As you walk through a garden, the fragrances you experience are one of the most appealing aspects. So I ask you, what if something could take that away? How would you feel? Robbed? Disappointed?
Flowers are living species. In order for them to give off a fragrant scent (香味),a large amount of energy is required. As rising temperatures reduce growth, flowers aren' t able to waste energy producing perfume.
Sure,we use flowers to extract (提取)fragrances, but flowers do not naturally produce these perfumes for us. Just as with shape and color, scent is an important quality in terms of attracting pollinators (传粉者).While taking a closer look, what a PhD student discovered was remarkable. Alon Cna' ani,a PhD student from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, has found that a rise in temperature leads to reduced scent production. During his lab work,Cna’ ani noticed that when plants were exposed to rising temperatures, they suffered from a reduced production and emission (挥发)of scent. However,he showed that plants could prevent this bad effect by “ turning on” a specific gene. When this gene is expressed, production is increased, regardless of the temperature.
Although his findings are interesting,it’s all a bit strange. Turning on and turning off genes — doesn' t really seem that natural. Have we gotten to the point where we need to edit nature? Without pollination, what will happen? There are just far too many questions and not enough answers.
To add fuel to the fire, global warming is also threatening pollinator populations — not to mention the heavy pesticide (杀虫剂)use. Do not think that you cannot do your part. You may not be a large company with dozens of factories, but you do make choices each and every day.
25. Why did the author mention the magical garden in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To show us a special experience.
C. To express his love for the garden. D. To stress the importance of fragrance.
26. When exposed to higher temperature,flowers_.
A. won' t blossom B. will grow healthily
C. will produce less scent D. will attract more pollinators
27. What’s the author’ s attitude to Cna’ ani’ s findings?
A . Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Uninterested. D . Negative.
28. What will be talked about next?
A. Ways to live a green life.
B. Importance of living a green life.
C. Suggestions on how to run a large company.
D. Measures the government should take to reduce global warming.

Most Americans eat too much salt, but the U. S. Food and Drug Administration ( FDA) recognizes that cajoling people to eat healthily will not have much influence. So,the FDA has set targets for restaurants and food makers to shake some of the salt out of diets.
For years, doctors and public health experts have tried their best to make people aware of the need to reduce their salt intake and reduce the risk of high blood pressure leading to heart attacks, strokes and other health problems. The advice fell on deaf ears as people continued dining on processed foods like bacon, cold cuts and potato chips.
The government is asking restaurants and food makers to voluntarily reduce the salt content in their products with targets for short-term (two years) and longer-term ( over the next 10 years) changes. The FDA estimates that its new “ voluntary salt reduction targets” to shake the salt out of American diets could save about half-a-million lives. It could also reduce health care costs by about 0 billion over a decade.
The government targets are not a flat percentage across the board; they vary by food type. For example,Asian sauces (调味汁),which are high in salt, have one of the highest target drops, with Hoisin and other similar sauce makers being asked to cut salt by 67 percent. Makers of cream-based sauces like alfredo (白酱意面)are asked to cut salt levels by 54 percent.
This is not a U. S. only problem. The World Health Organization ( WHO) also recommended a similar target as part of a global effort to shake people out of their salt-filled diets. Reportedly, there are 75 countries working to reduce their citizens’ salt intake. Many countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom,Ireland and Canada, have also made noticeable progress in reducing salt in some products.
32. What does the underlined word “cajoling” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A . Forcing. B. Warning. C. Ordering. D . Persuading.
33. Which of the following foods is requested to cut salt sharply?
A . Asian sauces. B. Alfredo. C. Hoisin. D . Bacon.
34. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. WHO has taken effective measures to reduce salt intake.
B. The problem of much salt intake has spread to the whole world.
C. Many countries have made great progress in reducing salt in products.
D. Only Asian countries haven' t realized the health risks of much salt intake.
35. What’s the text mainly about?
A. The risks of taking too much salt.
B. FDA targets to remove some salt out of diets.
C. Doctors worry about American people’ s health.
D. The standards for salt content in different diets.
