It was the perfect friendship. We would run and play together; he was by my side everywhere I went. He always sensed when something was wrong, and was there to comfort me. Gambit was my best friend through my most difficult year in high school. And even though I could never have made it through that tough year without him, when it was over, I had to give him up.
This very special friendship began when I joined 4H and became part of its Seeing Eye Puppy Project. I attended meetings and learned training techniques, but each month I found it harder to be there without a pup of my own and watch everyone else try new technique with their pups.
Finally the long - awaited day arrived. Gambit was only seven weeks old, and it was love at first sight. He was the cutest pup I had ever set eyes on.
Gambit and I immediately became best friends. My job was to teach basic commands, socialize him, and give him as much affection as possible dining the fragile (脆弱) puppy months. Gambit’s training was practically effortless; he learned commands very quickly and was always obedient (顺从).
Gambit had been in my home for five months when my junior year began. This was an extremely challenging year for me, and it was great to come home to his bright eyes and wagging (摇) tail. Every day I would talk to Gambit about everything on my mind. I knew he wouldn’t judge or reveal my secrets. Gambit and I had some of the best conversations, and all he did was listen.
This July I received the call that it was time for Gambit to return to complete his formal training. My heart sank. I had known he would have to go, but it seemed too soon. It felt like my best friend was moving away. I was at a loss what to do. My time with Gambit came to an end when my best friend and faithful companion moved on to a higher calling. He will help a blind person to be independent.
Gambit taught me that there will be things in life that you may love but have to give up.
All you can do is remember what they taught you, and it will make you a stronger person.

It is 8:45 a. m. and a line of hungry children eagerly await breakfast outside a classroom. Moments later they burst in, running over to a table covered with cereals, spreads, milk and juice to enjoy a satisfying, healthy breakfast.
This is familiar for Cannel McConnell, founder of The Magic Breakfast, a charity that delivers morning meals to children who would otherwise go without.
Ms McConnell created her organization 16 years ago after hearing from school staff that they had to feed their pupils before lessons started, as many were so hungry as to sleep in class.
The Magic Breakfast has a simple goal: to remove child hunger in the mornings by 2020. It is an example of one of many organizations using fresh produce to handle food poverty.
The charity has 200 partner schools in the capital and another 280 across the rest of England. There are 60 London schools on the waiting list. On average, 49 pupils receive breakfast in each school, meaning the charity helps 9,800 young people in London every day.
Ms McConnell says the Magic Breakfast has made a notable impact: “Every morning pupils come in, eat breakfast and socialise with one another. In terms of their academic development, they are sharper as the breakfast gives them the energy to get through the day and to learn.”
When asked about the obstacle to their goal, McConnell says, “The big thing we need, quite simply, is cash. The consequence (后果) of child hunger is that they will fail at school and we have to deal with fallout. Feeding hungry children so they can learn is no tough task. Breakfast is an ideal solution. As well as cash,we are looking for firms to donate food. I’d love for people to support us. And I’d love for us to proudly say we have sorted this problem out.”

D. She feels proud to have solved the problem of child hunger in England.
31. What can be a suitable title for, the text?
A. Hungry children: a tough problem for London

D. Carmel McConnell: considerate founder of The Magic BreakfastD
Luciano Baietti, a retired school, headmaster from Italy, holds the Guinness record for the most university degrees. The 70-year-old currently has 15 bachelors or masters degrees from various universities across Italy, and is getting ready to get his 16th.
Getting more than one college degree is not exactly unheard of, but 15 is apparently quite impressive, since it’s only been done by one man. Although he spends his days working around his house and garden, like most people his age, at night, Baretti turns into n student again. Every morning, at 3 a. m., when most of the world is sleeping, he wakes up and studies by the light of his desk lamp. He claims studying helps keep his mind active and that every degree he has obtained has helped broaden his knowledge of the world around him.
“Thanks to books, I feel free. After all, the words share the share root,” he says, referring to the Italian words libro (book) and libero (free). “Me claims to have been inspired by the 19th century French essayist Louis-Francois Berlin, whose portrait is also on display in his study, alongside his many framed university degrees, and whom he describes as” a man of culture and knowledge.
Baietti first made it into the Guinness Book of Records in 2002, after his eighth degree. Then he spent the next 15 years adding seven more bachelors and masters degrees to his collection.
“Each time I set myself a new challenge to see how far my body and my brain can go.” At 70-years-old, Baietti thinks he has enough energy for at least one more degree, this time in food science.
Probably the most important thing about Baietti’s achievement is that he managed to get most of his university degrees while working as headmaster of a secondary school, and volunteering with Italy’s Red Cross. The secret was always getting up at 3 in the morning to make sure that his thirst (渴求) for knowledge didn’t affect his professional activity and his family life. He spent 3 hours studying every day, and that was apparently all he needed to pass his exams and write his thesis (论文).
32. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Louis - Francois Berlin is on good terms with Baietti.
B. Baietti is the first Italian to break a Guinness record twice.
C. Nobody but Baietti has ever got more than one college degree.
D. Challenging himself opens up a broader world to Baietti.
33. Baietti can be best described as .
A. honest and considerate B. optimistic and generous
C. determined and hardworking D. reliable and imaginative
34. The key to Baietti’s success is .
A. the support from his family
B. his eagerness for fame
C. his nonstop daily learning
D. his unusual brain and energy
35. What lesson can we learn from the story of Baietti?
A. Well begun is half done.
B. Never too late to learn.
C. Take things as they come.
D. Strike the iron while it is hot.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Text 10
The time is seven thirty and here is radio JPD’s weather and traffic information this Thursday morning. Travelling will be difficult today because of heavy snow last night. Traffic is moving slowly on the M16 and M30 motorway and the police say the M43 will stay closed for more than an hour, until quarter to nine. In the city, an accident at the North Street means that it is closed to all cars, and drivers must use New Street or Lake Street. Because of this, some journeys by bus are taking longer. The No.16 bus to the city center is really late. There are also problems for railway passengers because of thick snow on the tracks. All trains to Oxford are late and there will be no trains to London until lunchtime. Passengers should phone 07223691 for the latest information about trains. This afternoon, it is going to be very windy, with snow this evening. So wear some warm clothes if you have to go out! For more weather information, look at our website or read our latest magazine.
