由来不同
一、“元旦”一词最早出现在公元前五万年左右的古埃及，而我们中国元旦”一词最早出现于《晋书》：“颛帝以孟夏正月为元，其实正朔元旦之春”的诗中。
二、圣诞节属于西方的宗教节日，是为了庆祝耶稣基督诞生的节日。圣经上实际并无记载耶稣诞生日期，圣诞节是后人公定的。
活动不同
一、在古时候，每年元旦都会举行庆贺、典仪祈祀等活动。因为古代春节和元旦属于同一天，因此元旦的活动和现在我们春节的活动相似，例如祭神祭先祖、舞龙灯、贴春联、放鞭炮等等。

关于元旦节的传说
一、传说有一种凶猛的动物，名字叫做“年”。它每到除夕之夜就到村里吃人和牲畜。所以人们在除夕之夜总是早早吃过晚饭，关起门，一家人围聚在一起，闲聊壮胆，躲避“年”兽的侵袭。
二、后来人们发现，“年”兽害怕红色和噼噼啪啪的声音，所以人们就在大门上贴红色的对联，挂起红色的灯笼，燃放烟花爆竹，这样“年”兽就被吓跑了。
关于圣诞节的传说
一、传说耶稣是因着圣灵成孕，由童女马利亚所生的。当时罗马政府下了命令，全部人民到伯利恒务必申报户籍。
二、在马利亚到达伯利恒时，无奈未能找到旅馆，只有一个马棚可以暂住。就在这个时候耶稣要出生了，于是马利亚被迫在马槽里生下耶稣。
三、后人为纪念耶稣的诞生，便定十二月二十五为圣诞节，年年望弥撒，纪念耶稣的出世。
