推荐信要尽量避免使用那些对人人都适用的评语，而应力求反映一个学生的特点。例如，在专业领域中遇到难题时的意志和动力、创新精神和求知欲、对新事物的反应能力、对陌生事物或环境的适应能力、人际沟通与处理人际关系的能力、领导才能、事业心与责任感、课堂讲授还或科研工作中表现出来的特长或弱点，等等。
★学生当然只可能具备其中某一些优点。
★应举例说明，如曾经获得的奖励、发表过的论文、参加过的重要学术会议，以及在学生组织或教学组织中的任职，等等。
在推荐信中要注意的其它事项是：
★★推荐人应该对学生的学习或专业工作情况比较熟悉;
★★实事求是，既要不夸张其辞，也不要低估学生的能力;
★★不要用套话，但介绍学生的情况要具体、详细，不要写得过于简单;
★★学生在教学活动以外的其它表现和成就，可以作简略的介绍，这也可以从一个侧面反映学生的特点。
您永远不可能有第二次机会给人留下第一印象。您的申请材料就是院校对您产生的“第一印象”，它将提供证明您值得录取的机会，并表明您已经具备了足够的学识基础以攻读所申请修读的课程。

一、客观真实。不可否认，无论是国内还是国外，推荐信多少都有过誉之处，但决不能胡吹一通，毕竟申请人是去进一步深造学习的，倘若已经“非常完美”又何必负笈海外呢!
二、真实事例。通过真实事例表现出来的申请人的品质和能力才最为可信，更有说服力。无论是推荐信还是现实生活中，我们在评估一个人的时候，要切忌空洞，满篇华丽的言辞固然漂亮，但没有认可真实可靠的事例支撑的话，依然是没有参考价值的。
三、注意书写的角度和口吻。由于推荐信是通过第三人对申请人的评价，所以申请人在撰写的时候要注意表达方式和角度。转换思维方式，尽量以教授或其他推荐人的口吻和角度来书写。
四、要避免语法、拼写等明显的低级错误。
五、要注意推荐信之间的搭配。美国大学基本上需要申请人提交三封推荐信。这是因为，美国学校所看重的申请人的能力不只是一个方面，不会仅仅因为学生学习能力强，或实践动手能力强就简单的决定录取。它们所要看到的是申请人的综合学术和非学术形象。所以，推荐信在书写上要注意从多方面展示申请人的品质和能力，避免重复。推荐信之间要搭配好，从不同方面反映申请人的品质能力。通过推荐信，能让录取委员会全面认为你。
