he plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airport all morning. They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamonds from South Africa. A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds. When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield. Two men took the parcel off the plane and carried it into the Customs House. While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel. To their surprise, the precious parcel was full of stones and sand!
飞机误点了，侦探们在机场等了整整一上午。他们正期待从南非来的一个装着钻石的贵重包裹。数小时以前，有人向警方报告，说有人企图偷走这些钻石。当飞机到达时，一些侦探等候在主楼内，另一些侦探则守候在停机坪上。有两个人把包裹拿下飞机，进了海关。这时两个侦探把住门口，另外两个侦探打开了包裹。令他们吃惊的是，那珍贵的包裹里面装的全是石头和沙子!

It was 9 pm, detective Brown was reading a book at home. Suddenly, the power was broken. 晚上九点，布朗侦探正在家里看书，忽然停电了。
Five minutes later, there was a loud noise. Then, a near house was exploded and burned. Detective Brown ran to the scene at once. 五分钟之后，突然一声巨响。而后，不远处的一间房子爆炸着火了。布朗侦探连忙向现场跑去。
The owner of this house was an old woman. She was very sad and said to the detective:“Fortunately, I was buying something in a shop, otherwise…”这幢房子的主人是一位老妇人。她非常伤心，对布朗侦探说：“幸亏当时我去商店买东西，要不然……”

The police founded out that the old woman’s nephew Roy was the suspect(嫌疑犯). Because the old woman had a lot of jewellery and had them insured. The beneficiary(受益人) was Roy. 警方发现老妇人的侄儿罗伊是嫌疑犯。老妇人有许多宝石，并且都投了保险，指明受益人就是罗伊。
But Roy was not on the scene when the explosion happened. It could be proved that he was in the hotel which was 10km away.可事发时罗伊不在现场，而且可以证明他当时在距离现场10公里外的旅馆里。
The detective asked：“Did Roy go to the old woman’s house that night?” “Yes. He finished his supper and left on half past eight o’clock，”a police answered.侦探说：“那天晚上，罗伊去过老妇人的家吗?”“是的。他吃完晚饭后八点半离开了老妇人的家。”一个警察回答说。
Detective Brown thought about a few minutes and said: “It was made by Roy.”布朗侦探思考了一下说：“这起事件就是罗伊制造的。”
