It is common to experience culture shock when visiting other countries with different traditions and customs, particularly for an extended period of time. Some visitors are interested in adapting to foreign cultures and effectively manage culture shock; some people are not. There are several reasons why we can better enjoy travelling with an open mind and develop an appreciation for cultural differences across the world .

As visitors in foreign lands, we are probably in for the feeling of disorientation, insecurity and anxiety in unfamiliar situations. altogether known as culture shock. This phenomenon is understandable because values, behaviors and social customs we routinely take for granted no longer serve us in different surroundings. Of course, it takes time to learn a 'do-as-Romans-do' attitude, but it is always advisable to keep an open mind. We ought not to give in to the temptation to isolate ourselves into the comfort of what is familiar. Perhaps, all we need is a little more patience to understand the new environment in its historical and social context. In all events, the right thing to do is to observe objectively, and not to judge automatically as if anything different is 'wrong' or 'negative'.

To better appreciate differences culture-wise, it is also important that we learn beforehand enough background information about a country we are ging to. In case we know close to nothing about that country, it means that we might have no interest in its culture, so why should we visit there in the first place? For visitors, a little bit of knowledge about a foreign culture tends to be misleading. But it doesn`t have to be that way. For instance, making an effort to learn the local language and social customs can increase communication skills and proper behaviors, both being of great help to demonstrate an interest in a different culture as well as integrating with the local community. In fact, before travelling it pays to learn something of many things about a foreign country's culture and tradition, ranging from the greetings to the clothing to the before-meal ceremonies.

Although a slight mention of the past pastoral life arouses a nostalgia and reminiscent beauty, which is unexceptionally characterized by isolation and somewhat disconsolation, various and frequent communications in business, education, scientific research, and even the daily life are flooding the existent values, ideas, and ideals. Inevitably, this social phenomenon provokes a storm of commendation and criticism as well.
Frequent communications in various fields among cultures and people undoubtedly benefit individuals’ life. Almost every citizen becomes the beneficiary of the communications. People around the world today are able to enjoy otherwise unavailable products and services. For instance, it is due to the international communication in business that people in China can such high quality products as Mercedes Benz from Germany, Titoni watch from Switzerland, and IBM computers. All these cases demonstrate one thing: communications contribute human beings.
Not only are diverse array of communications in the international spectrum positive to individuals, they also have been exerting significant favorable influences on family life. It was virtually incredible to imagine an international family five decades ago, but today on account of the rapid development of communications and transportations, religion and racial discriminations have almost entirely “gone with the wind”. It is no longer an “abnormal” thing that a Chinese husband with a Japanese wife. Such international family, as scientific research warrants, is a welcome development in terms of both biological and political elements.
In fact, the advantages of communications are also shaping and reflecting the general human civilization development. If God, as Bible says, created different languages among men, then men all over the world today are able to work together, pray together, and struggle for freedom together. The communications are actually a process of globalization. This is the trend of sustainable development. With communications, people become brothers and sisters rather than enemies. With communications, there will be peace rather than war. With communications, the mundane mortals will eventually retrieve the paradise that our forefathers lost and get renascence.
Admittedly, the communications might have some negative influences. But the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. Therefore, the communications should be advocated and encouraged with the utmost enthusiasm.

The closer communication between different countries has been a conspicuous tendency in recent years, both in economic and cultural aspects. Some people doubt the continual connections will cause vanishing of a country’s identities. In my view, the result of international depends on the situation in different nations.

In face, the international contact is a definitely mutual benefit for countries. The closer connection opens up huge potential opportunities for business cooperation. Besides, the more cultural contacts, the better understanding of other peoples. Cultural communications can alter people’s attitudes towards another culture and embrace different values, which will promote multi-cultural understanding and even remove cultural barriers.

Admittedly, the cross-national interaction will also impose a negative influence on national identities, especially to those weak countries such as Pacific island countries and some mini countries in Europe and Africa. It seems that in these weak countries, the locals have become more familiar with exotic cultures, which reflects the foreign cultural invasion to some degree. For instance, the mainstream value of teenager in these countries has been mainly shaped by Hollywood blockbusters instead of their traditional literature or other artistic works.

In my opinion, whether closer global communication will cause demise of national identities rely on different countries. America, as well as Canada and Australia, is marked by their high population mobility, or immigrants, to be more exactly. The culture in these nations is based on other cultures indeed. Therefore, they welcome different countries and it cannot be a problem to them. Also, some countries, like China, India and Britain have their own unique ethic identity and cultural confidence which come from their long history. Global contact will also be acceptable to them. Only to the weak countries, the local government should take steps to protect their vulnerable cultures.

Some people say that the increasing business and cultural contract between countries has a positive effect; others say it could contribute to a loss of the countries identities. Do you agree or agree or disagree.
Our world is changing but the questions seem to remain the same; is increased contact between cultures leading to cultural destruction? Well maybe it is, and, maybe it isn’t. And maybe that is a good thing, and maybe it isn’t. But what ever is happening we have to understand that we cannot control it, nor change it, but rather we have to get used to it.
In this modern world there are so many possibilities; many people can live how they wish and where they wish. People choose to take up any identity that they want; in China some westerners embrace Chinese culture, whilst their Chinese neighbours are wearing Nike and eating at KFC. So it is hard to say if this is cultural loss or not. (Are American’s committing cultural suicide with their KFC and McDonalds food?) The world is far more complex than we try to make out.
And why are we so protective of our culture? (Chinese foot-binding, amongst other things, are cultural artifacts which we would rather forget.) Why can’t the new things we create also be valuable? Trying to preserve the old ways when they may be unsuitable for our future or our survival seems ridiculous. We need to move forward to survive. Increased contact with other countries and cultures is part of that movement forward.
But we will create new things if we give people freedom and resources to do so. I say let people loose, let our culture free; don’t try to hold it back or control it, for surely you will only kill it. Let’s embrace all forms of change; don’t worry we can reject them later.
