Describe a subject that you used to dislike but now are interested in

  以前不喜欢现在喜欢的科目

Describe a subject that you used to dislike but now are interested in You should say:

  What it is

  Why you disliked it before

What you are interested in now

And explain why you become interested in it

I hated English class for a long time because the grammar part was so boring. But I need to clarify that I only hated the grammar part. In middle school, we spent the majority of our time learning and analyzing grammar(大部分时间都要学习和分析语法现象). For example, when should we use the past perfect(过去完成式) and when to use the subjunctive mood(虚拟式). Those were the compulsory parts of our tests. I found some of those points really hard to distinguish between and I always lost points on that(丢分). It would have been acceptable to learn it for one semester(学一学期还可以接 受), but for six years, that was a true nightmare. So I should say I lost my interest in learning the grammar part. But grammar is the foundation of languages, especially for us non-native speakers(对非英语母语人士来说). After I went to college, I had more time to watch movies and read books and I found that grammar is everywhere. It is not possible to separate the grammar from the language itself(不能把语法和语言分割) and actually grammar is not so abstract when you see it used in real life. So maybe our education system should take responsibility(承担责任) for it being so difficult for Chinese students. Now I learn grammar in my everyday life and it is easier to understand. For me, I think it is important to integrate learning into daily life(把学习融入生活很重要) and I can really develop my interest in everything.

  MODEL ANSWER 范文:

My favorite subject is physics, a field of science I have had the privilege of studying with in my junior and senior high school science classes. I really wasn’t expecting anything about this subject since I didn’t know much about it at the beginning, but I was proven wrong in the end. Initially, I studied this subject when I was in middle school and I was studying at Beijing No. 8 high school which was a really famous middle school in China since it incorporated a very intensive course. Middle school life is a constant struggle to maintain good marks in class because that’s the way the government set up our educational system. Consequently, teenagers who were studying at this particular university had a very dull and mundane life since you have to study 24/7 which didn’t provide enough time for them to bond with their family and other students. Often times I would consider playing truant but since I’m a good student, I never allowed myself to do it since I think it would cause me problems in the future. By studying physics, I came to understand the different principles behind some of the phenomena in the real world. For example, why objects fall, why rain would see lightning first, and then hear thunder, why the compass could point in the appropriate direction, and so on. As a kid, I often wondered about so many things that I didn’t understand and I would often ask my dad or my mom questions about simple things like what makes a balloon fly so high, how ice cream can get frozen inside a freezer and how the boat floats on water, you know, simple questions by a child barely able to take care of oneself. They would often tell me to wait until I get to a certain age for I would comprehend them when I finally attend school. It’s the simple things in life that we try to experience and understand that makes the subject really interesting for me. I like physics because it is a very engrossing subject. First of all, it has taught me a lot of enticing fundamentals, so I can look at the circumstance in real life more scientifically. Besides, I like to challenge myself, and physics is a good choice for me. Since physics is difficult, whenever I understand some theorems, I feel a great sense of feat.

MORE IDEAS TO TALK ABOUT THIS CUE CARD

  1. Mathematics

Talking about an interesting subject, you might want to illustrate the highly intellectual field Math. A brief explanation of it is that Mathematics is the science that deals with the logic of quantity, arrangement, and shape. Math is omnipresent in everything that we do and see. It can also be considered a building block for different aspects in our daily lives, including sports, architecture (ancient and modern), forms of art, engineering, money, and even mobile devices,.

You can add in a few specific details like “Since the beginning of documented history, math discovery has been at the forefront of every refined society, and in use in even the most primordial of cultures. The needs of math surfaced based on the wants of the population. The more multiplex a society, the more compound the mathematical needs. Antiquated tribes relied heavily on a little more than the ability to count, but also relied on math to calculate the exact location of the sun and the physics of hunting.

  2. Geometry

Another thing you can talk about is the branch of mathematics which is Geometry. It is a branch of mathematics that is concerned with the properties of configurations of geometric objects - points, (straight) lines, and circles being the most basic of these

You can include a general observation of the subject’s uses and significance by stating, “Geometry is perhaps the most rudimentary of the sciences that allow man, by wholly logical processes, to make hypothesis about the physical world. The power of geometry, in the sense of precision and effectiveness of these abstractions, is stunning, and has been a strong inspiration for the study of rationale in geometry.” Make sure to include real life experiences in which Geometry has been applied in your every life, if not try to find a similar experience that you can connect with the study.

  3. Science

Another popular subject that we need to consider is probably the most interesting one. The word "science" probably brings to mind many different pictures: a fat textbook, white lab coats and microscopes, an astronomer peering through a telescope, a naturalist in the rainforest, Einstein's equations scribbled on a chalkboard, the launch of the space shuttle, bubbling beakers. Science is both a body of knowledge and a process. In school, science may sometimes seem like a collection of isolated and static facts listed in a textbook, but that's only a small part of the story. Just as importantly, science is also a process of discovery that allows us to link isolated facts into coherent and comprehensive understandings of the natural world. Science is a way of discovering what's in the universe and how those things work today, how they worked in the past, and how they are likely to work in the future. Scientists are motivated by the thrill of seeing or figuring out something that no one has before

  4. Chemistry

You can also talk about another branch of science which is chemistry. Chemistry is the concentrated study of matter, its various properties, the how’s and why’s of substances combining or separating to form other substances, and how these substances react when combining with energy. Most people think of chemists as being white-coated scientists playing with strange liquid concoctions in a laboratory, but the reality is that we’re all chemists. You can also say that understanding the basic concepts of the subject is very significant for almost every profession. Chemistry is supposed to be part of our everyday lives.

It is good to explain that every material in existence is made up of matter — even our personal bodies. You can explain that the study is involved in everything we do, from growing and cooking food to cleaning our homes and bodies to launching a space shuttle. Chemistry is part of a number of physical sciences that helps us explore, understand, and explain our world.

  5. Music

As a subject, music is can be an essential part of our daily lives. We listen to it when waking up, while in the subway, at the workplace, and with our buddies. For many, music is like a regular listening buddy. It can bring us joy and motivate us, accompany us through difficult times, and alleviate our worries.

Music is much more than mere entertainment. It has been a feature of every known human society—anthropologists and sociologists have yet to find a single culture throughout the course of human history that has not had music. In fact, many evolutionary psychologists today make the argument that music predated language. Primitive tribes and religious practices have used music to reach enlightened states for thousands of years, and Pythagoras used music to heal different psychological and physical ailments. Currently, cutting-edge scientific research has shown the effect that music has on the brain, the individual, and society.

  PART 3

What subjects are less practical in everyday life?

Mathematics is a less practical subject because it is too esoteric and abstract. For example, in your day-to-day life, it is almost unnecessary to compute some complex integrals. Moreover, many mathematical theorems are based on the abstract assumption that it is almost impossible to apply to real life. These are the reasons why I think math is more theoretical than practical.

  KEYWORDS:

Esoteric - intended for or understood by only a few people who have special knowledge

Abstract - existing as an idea, feeling, or quality, not as a material object

Day-to-day - happening every day as a regular part of your job or life

Complex - having many partsrelated to each other in ways that may be difficult to understand

Integrals - functions of which a given function is the derivative, i.e., which yield that functions when differentiated, and which may express the area under the curve of a graph of the function

Assumption - a willingness to accept something as true without question or proof

Theoretical - concerned with or involving the theory of a subject or area of study rather than its practical application

What subjects are practical in everyday life?

Personally, I think the Chinese language is a very functional subject. We use Chinese knowledge in our daily communication and writing, so we have to learn it by heart. By learning Chinese, we can not only improve our literary attainment, but also enrich our knowledge and broaden our horizons. Also, we need to make it a point to keep up with our studies so we may graduate without abruptions. Since learning Chinese is an academic prerequisite, we practiced it at a very early age, as early preparatory school up until middle school.

  KEYWORDS:

Functional - designed to be practical and useful rather than attractive

Learn it by heart - to memorize it

Literary - (of language) associated with literary works or other formal writing; having a marked style intended to create a particular emotional effect

Attainment - the action or fact of achieving a goal toward which one has worked

To keep up with our studies - to not fall behind

Academic - relating to an educational or scholarly institution or environment

Prerequisite - a thing that is required as a prior condition for something else to happen or exist

Do you think students should have the right to choose the subject they want to study in university?

I think students should be granted with the right to choose the subjects they want to study. First of all, only interest is the best educator. Students choose courses that are of interest to them, so they can be more engaged, graver and thus learn better. Second, students can choose the subjects they need according to their future development. Only students themselves know their own future advancement and career intents, and the unified curriculum offered by the school may not be of much help to some students in their future career target.

  KEYWORDS:

Educator - a person who provides instruction or education; a teacher

Engaged - occupied, attracted, or involved someone's interest or attention

Grave - very many, or too many to be counted

Development - a specified state of growth or advancement

  Advancement - development or improvement

  Intents - intention or purpose

Unified - made or became united, uniform, or whole

Curriculum - the subjects comprising a course of study in a school or college

Do you think art subjects are less useful than science subjects?

I don’t think science is more useful than art. First, art can cultivate a person’s temperament and culture, and play an important role in shaping a person’s personality. Second, art class is a great opportunity for students to relax and entertain, freeing them from the heavy pressure of schoolwork. Third is that, this type of subject are not less useful since you can get a bachelor’s degree in this field by studying it in a university. In addition, the art subject is considered as a higher education in multiple countries overseas and that you can even get a masters degree with it.

  KEYWORDS:

Cultivate - to try to develop and improve something

Temperament - the part of your character that affects your moods and the way you behave

Schoolwork - studying activities done at school or at home

Bachelor’s Degree - an undergraduate course which usually lasts 3-4 years

Higher education - education, usually in a college or university, that is followed after high school or secondary school

Master’s degree - a period of study which often follows the completion of a bachelors degree or is undertaken by someone regarded as capable of a higher-level academic course

What kinds of new subjects would emerge in the future?

Since my major is mathematics, I’m going to talk about the new subjects that will be related to mathematics in the future. The big data discipline comes first because with the development of science and technology and the increase of data, people begin to search for new and efficient data processing methods. In addition, there will be artificial intelligence, which will combine mathematics and computer science more closely, and use computer to implement mathematical algorithms.

  KEYWORDS:

Big data - extremely large data sets that may be analyzed computationally to reveal patterns, trends, and associations, especially relating to human behavior and interactions

Discipline - a particular area of study, esp. a subject studied at a college or university

Efficient - working or operating in a way that gets the results you want without any waste

Data processing - the use of computers to store, organize, and perform calculations on information

Artificial intelligence - the use of computer programs that have some of the qualities of the human mind, such as the ability to understand language, recognize pictures, and learn from experience

Algorithms - a set of mathematical instructions or rules that, especially if given to a computer, will help to calculate an answer to a problem
