Partridge Sky
Written for a Friend
At dusk the crows cast a cold gloom in the sky.
Newly green poolside willows look tender and fair.
If there were no parting grief before the eye,
I don't believe men on earth would have white hair.
My heart is broken, how
Can my tears not be shed?
And lovesick now,
I mount again the little tower red.
Although I know the mountains have barred all from view,
How could I not lean on the rails and long for you?
Ruined Splendour
Du Mu
The splendour of the Six Dynasties—now a rank growth of weeds! Yet the sky is the samequiet blue, the clouds tranquil as of yore. Over the ages, birds have come and gone, fadinginto the gloom of the wooded hills; men have rejoiced and wept, their songs and wails alikemerged in the roaring stream. In the valley below hundreds of cottages now nestle, theircurtained windows hut against the late autumn rain. Oft as the sun goes down, there rises achill wind, carrying to these lofty towers the shrill notes of a lonesome flute. What a pity FanLi is not to be met with, that man of sagacity who retired at the zenith of his political career!Over there, near the very lakes he used to roam, the silhouette of ancient trees looms raggedthrough the evening haze.

The Ghost of a Garden
Du Mu
The pomp, the pageant, the profusion—all gone with the dust of the princely prodigal. Yetthe grass grows green and the stream flows unruffled. Only in the gloaming, when the birdspour forth their doleful music, is Nature reminded of Beauty's tragic end. Then the east windsighs, and fated flowers flutter and fall.

Pity It Abides Not!
Du Mu
Spring is on the decline. That spells the end of the year; the remaining days do not count.
I raise my cup to the flowers that are loath to go; even the wine tastes of winter. Distressingthe thought: after the parting cup, the broom.
Thus life flows away. If there be anyone to stay its course, tell me who.
