The Road Not Taken
--Robert Frost
TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
显得更诱人,更美丽;
我将轻声叹息将往事回顾;
Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882)
I plucked a honeysuckle where
The hedge on high is quick with thorn ,
And climbing for the prize ,
was torn ,
And fouled my feet in quag-water;
And by the thorns and by the wind
The blossom that I took was
thinn ’d ,
And yet I found it sweet and fair .
Thence to a richer growth I came ,
Where , nursed in mellow intercourse ,
The honey suckles sprang by scores ,
Not harried like my single stem ,
All virgin lamps of scent and dew ,
So from my hand that first I threw ,
Yet plucked not any more of them .
Note: The name honeysuckle comes from the sweet nectar that the flower produces tointoxicate the greedy bee. Its powerful fragrance seduces the human senses as it pervadesthe air. The perfume of this passionate plant may turn a maiden’s head, hence wildhoneysuckle is a symbol of inconstancy in love.
THE FIRST JASMINES
Ah, these jasmines, these white jasmines!
I seem to remember the first day when I filled
my hands with these jasmines, these white jasmines.
I have loved the sunlight, the sky and the green earth;
I have heard the liquid murmur of the river through the darkness of midnight;
Autumn sunsets have come to me at the bend of a road in the lonely waste, like a bride raisingher veil to accept her lover.
我曾爱那阳光,爱那天空还有那绿色的大地;
我曾在漆黑的午夜聆听那河水淙淙的呢喃;
Yet my memory is still sweet with the first white jasmines that I held in my hand when I was achild.
Many a glad day has come in my life,and I have laughed with merrymakers on festival nights.
On grey mornings of rain I have crooned many an idle song.
I have worn round my neck the evening wreath of bakulas woven by the band of love.
Yet my heart is sweet with the memory of the first fresh jasmines that filled my hands when Iwas a child.
