On the reality show I Am a Singer 3, the 40-year-old singer-songwriter has been praised for his singing ability and, unexpectedly, for his sense of humor. On stage, Li sings quiet songs slowly and “rescues the program”, commented Cheng Zhenwei on People’s Daily Online.
Harbin-born Li has a clear and smooth voice, which he inherited from his Peking Opera singer father. And his shy nature and poetic lyrics have also given him the nickname “Poetic Musician”.
“In my younger days, music was like therapy,” he told China Daily.
Music was also the bridge that got him into Tsinghua University. A self-taught guitarist, Li won a number of singing competitions. He was admitted thanks to Tsinghua’s plan to recruit students with musical talent.
In the 1990s, so-called “campus ballads” were popular in China. Shuimu Nianhua, a group that Li formed with another Tsinghua student called Lu Gengxu, was one of the best groups of the type.
But the pair went their separate ways in 2002. Li was tired of doing commercial performances. Also, he didn’t agree with their decision to change their style from folk to rock.
Afterward, Li released several albums on his own. They were all in his own musical style: “soft and warm, down-to-earth and intimate”, commented China Radio International.
Unlike some other musicians who release their songs quickly, Li took his time to write heartfelt music.
“Writing songs is like collecting water in a cup. When the cup is full, the water comes out naturally,” he told China Daily.
For nearly ten years, he did very few interviews or concerts. His low-key life may well have continued if Faye Wong hadn’t sung his song, Legend, at 2010’s CCTV Spring Festival Gala.
Li said the song brought him out of his “cave ” and back into spotlight: concerts and reality shows have been endless, including this year’s I Am a Singer.
On TV, Li has not fitted the stereotype most people have of pop stars, mostly because of his academic background.
And while studying electronic engineering at Tsinghua might not have helped Li’s career musically, it certainly gave his songs and mindset a different touch.
His answer on the show of “I am already very smart. Why do I need a smartphone?” to the question “Why don’t you use smartphones?” was perhaps unusual for a pop star. He went on to show it when he said, “Two is good! 2 is No 1 among prime numbers,” commenting on the fact that he was chosen as the second singer to get on stage! Are you impressed yet?

Nothing is Impossible
The hardships of his childhood have taught Chen Zhou valuable lessons he now wants to share with others. Zhao Ruixue reports in Jinan.
A bulletin board in his office lists Chen Zhou's schedule for April: He is due to give 15 speeches this month, and he says his agent has had to turn down invitations to do dozens more.
The 31-year-old has traveled throughout China during the last two years, visiting schools, universities and companies with his message: "Nothing is impossible as long as you hold on."
Chen Zhou has climbed more than 90 mountains in China and he draws on his experiences as a motivational speaker.
Chen's career as a motivational speaker began in 2012 when he was invited by an Internet addiction recovery center in his hometown Linyi, Shandong province, to talk about what motivated him to climb mountains - something that is especially challenging for Chen since he lost both his legs in a railway accident when he was 13. It was a life-changing moment in an already difficult childhood.
Chen's parents divorced when he was 6. His father was addicted to gambling and his mother married another man, so Chen was sent to live with his grandfather. After the accident, he was confined to his bed for a year. When he emerged from his room, he found that he had been abandoned by his playmates.
"Not wanting to be a burden on my grandfather, I left home to make a living on my own," Chen says.
"It was not easy to make a living by myself. I experienced every sort of bullying, which made me frequently think about ending my life."
When he was about 15 years old, he stuffed himself into a garbage bin in winter hoping to freeze to death, but he was saved by an old woman who found him and gave him food.
"I met a lot of nice people, including the old woman who gave me food when I crouched in a garbage bin in a freezing winter and the man who saved me when I fell into a river. If they hadn't given me a hand, I might have already died," Chen says.
In the end he finally gave up the idea of killing himself.
"I decided to be thankful for what I do have, and not be mad about what I don't," he says.
In 2000, when Chen was at the foot of Taishan Mountain, he felt a strong desire to get to the top of the mountain to see the sunrise.
"I asked a man who returned to the foot from the mountain's top - 'How high is the mountain?' The man looked down at me and said: 'It's useless for you to ask this question. No matter how high it is, you are not able to climb the mountain,'" Chen recalls.
"His words pushed me to climb the mountain. I wanted to prove that I can live as a normal person."
He spent 14 hours getting to the highest peak on Taishan Mountain, which is 1,532 meters above sea level, with the help of two wooden boxes.
"As I climbed many people advised me to give up, but I kept on going," Chen says.
To date he has climbed more than 90 mountains in China, including Huashan Mountain in Shannxi province, which is known for its steepness.
The same year Chen started climbing mountains, he began singing in the streets to make a living. This brought him his biggest reward when he met his beautiful wife.
"I never thought I could find my soul mate who would want to share her life with me," Chen says.
"I fell in love with him the first time I saw him singing in a square," says Yu Lei, Chen's wife. "I was touched by his smile. And he had the most important thing I am looking for - respect for life."
Chen is now the father of two children, an 11-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy.
"My kids have never been ashamed by having a father who has no legs," Chen says.
Chen didn't dare to pick up his kids from school until one day, when his daughter was 9 years old, he plucked up the courage to wait for her outside the school.
"Children stopped to look at me and some asked my daughter: 'Why does your father have no legs?'" Chen recalls.
"But my daughter didn't feel any embarrassment. She whispered to me that she is proud of me.
"In her painting of our family, I have legs. She regards me as the same as them."
After he gave his first speech at the Internet addiction recovery center in Linyi, Chen got several calls from parents.
"They told me their children had given up the Internet and were studying hard. You can never imagine how happy I was to know my story can inspire others," Chen says.
Now in addition to touring China to share his stories, Chen is building a website aimed at helping kids in need.

Boyzone are a popular Irish boy band of the 1990s. They had major success in the UK and Ireland and differing levels of success in parts of Europe and Asia with six hit singles in the UK. By 2007 they had sold over 15 million records.
Boyzone was put together in 1993 by Louis Walsh who is also known for managing Johnny Logan and Westlife. Before even recording any material they made a now infamous appearance on RTÉ's The Late Late Show. Their first album Said and Done was released in 1995 and the following two studio albums in 1996 and 1998. Four compilation albums have been released, the latest being The Silver Collection in summer 2007.
Band history
Boyzone was formed in 1993 by Louis Walsh through an advertisement calling for auditions to form a vocal group. About 300 singers tried out and initially, six were selected. They made their first appearance only a day after being formed on Ireland's top-rated Late Late Show dancing to a backing track.
The band played through 1993 and in the early parts of 1994 all over Ireland. They played in Pubs when Polygram signed them up and released the cover version of the Detroit Spinners hit "Working My Way Back To You", featuring Mikey Graham and Stephen Gately on lead vocals. It reached No. 3 in the Irish Charts.
The Osmonds' hit "Love me for a Reason" paved the way for them to break the British Charts. It hit No. 2 in Britain and was included in their 1995 hit debut album "Said and Done." The album reached the No. 1 spot in both UK and Ireland.
The band's second album, "A Different Beat" released in 1996, contained their first UK number one single, "Words." The album also contained the hit singles A Different Beat, Isn't it a Wonder and Picture of You, the OST of Mr. Bean, The Ultimate Disaster Movie. Ronan Keating won the Ivor Novello award for songwriting in 1997 for Picture of you.
Their third studio album Where We Belong, released in 1998 showcased boyzone's writing abilities. The album further widened their fan base due to the more matured songs. It contained the hit singles "All that I Need" (which stayed for 6 weeks in the MTV Asia charts), "Baby Can I Hold You", and "No Matter What". "No Matter What" was their best selling single and was voted Song of the Year.
Boyzone has been commemorated by the London's Rock Circus by inviting them to place their handprints on the "Walls of Hands" beside the likes of Eric Clapton and Michael Jackson. Also, Wax figures of the boyz were made beside U2 in Dublin.
Boyzone have been active supporters of charity works. They appeared on the Childliners record The Gift Of Christmas alongside acts such as Backstreet Boys, MN8, E.Y.C., Sean Maguire, Deuce, Ultimate Kaos, Sonia, Heaven 17, Peter Andre, Michelle Gayle, Dannii Minogue and many more.
In 1999, their greatest hits compilation "By Request" was released and was followed by another tour. Also, during this time, due to the threat of a tabloid expose, Stephen Gately revealed that he was gay and was in love with the ex-Caught in the Act member Eloy de Jong. It was also during this year when Ronan Keating released his first solo single, When You Say nothing at all. They have all decided to take some time off the band to pursue solo projects.
The group performed together for the last time in January 2000. In the seven years that they were together (1993 - 2000), they have been dubbed the "most promising band of the year" by the British magazine Smash Hits in 1995. What initially started as a performance that followed their Late, Late Show appearance, Boyzone has gone on to sell more than 10 million copies. All sixteen of their singles reached the top five and they became the first Irish act to have four number one hits in the United Kingdom. Their 1998 tour of Ireland shattered all sales records when 35,000 tickets were sold out in four hours.
