First, heading for the large amount of gold or any thick prizes. If it is only the prize that a athlete cares, all he wants is winning. He may betrayal the principle of competition, that is, FAIR. He may use dirty methods or whatsoever to win the game. Then a competition lost its meaning to him. Obviously, competition comes second to him.
The second reason might be testing one self. If an athlete just wants to test himself in a game and see what he can do, he wouldn't care who is the winner or who is the loser. Once I saw the TV show, it was about the fathers and their kids having the match, they were separated by five groups and compete for the match. At first, they were competing happily, but as the game came to the end, the last group was so worried. The father inspired his kid to stick on and finish the match, while the kid was crying because he knew he must be the last. After the match, the father told his kid that winning was not the most important thing for the match, the first thing was to enjoy the game and finish it, the result was not that important. I agree with the father, the child must be endowed with the consciousness that to enjoy the game is more important than to win. Every match can only have one win, but we can enjoy every match.

The players in the wide arena are rubbing their hands, as if itching to drag the opposite side in front of their own face immediately. Look at the students around, all with burning blood, as if they also want to participate in.
Most of our teammates are like bean sprouts, but half of the opponents are heavy, laughing at us with “bad smile”, seeming to bring us down only by laughing! 激烈的拔河比赛
校节到了，又要开运动会喽!四年级展开了激烈异常的拔河比赛!
在宽阔的赛场上，选手们个个摩拳擦掌，好像恨不得一下子就把对方拽到自己面前来。再看看围观的同学们，个个热血沸腾，好像也想参与其中。
我方队友大部分都像豆芽菜，一半的对手都是重量级!冲着我们“坏笑”，像是笑也能把我们笑趴下!有的蹲住马步，咬紧牙关，拉紧绳子;有的把绳子绕在肩头，侧着身子，弓着腿，好像绳子的另一头绑的是几大锅红烧排骨似的;
还有一位“重量级”，干脆拉着绳子，一屁股坐在地上，一副悠闲自得的样子，仿佛十辆大卡车也别想拉得动他。嗨!双方的体格差距太大了，对方一个“胖墩”，我们两个“大力士”才勉强拉动，更别提“瘦猴”了!果然，坐在地上的这位“重量级”站起来，一转身，向前走了几步，一爆发，我方就全军覆没了!
第二局：我们改变了策略——以防守为上策。一开始，少用力，能保证线不过界就行，留力气扛他们的“大爆发”。果然，对方的爆发来了，与此同时，我们也爆发了!正如我们预料，胖子们轻敌，再加上耐力不佳，与我方僵持了一会就泄气了，被我们一举攻破!
决定胜负的第三局终于到了!胖子们“吃一堑，长一智”，不再用蛮力，而是均匀用力，牵制我们。哈，机会又来了!你们不爆发，我们可发狠喽!我方所有队员齐心协力，使出吃奶的劲儿，一、二、三!胜利的天枰在那一刻完全倒向了我们!
我们赢了!瞬间，赛场被掌声、欢呼声汇成了欢乐的海洋!
