  18 Holes In His Mind

Major James Nesmeth had a dream of improving his golf game—and he developed a unique method of achieving his goal. Until he devised this method, he was just your average weekend golfer, shooting in mid-to low-nineties. Then, for seven years, he had not touched a club, for he had been in a Vietnamese prison, as a prisoner of war.

Ironically, it was during the seven-year break from the game that Major Nesmeth came up with his amazingly effective technique for improving his game—a technique we can all learn from. In fact, the first time he played golf after his hiatus from the game, he shot an astonishing 74! He had cut 20 strokes off his average without having swung a golf club in seven years! Unbelievable. Not only that, but his physical condition had actually deteriorated during those seven years of imprisonment.

What was Major Nesmeth's secret? Visualization.

During the entire time he was imprisoned, he experienced no physical activity. During the first few months he did nothing but pray for his release. Then he realized he had to find some way to occupy his mind or he would lose his sanity. That's when he learned to visualize.

In his mind, he selected his favorite golf course and started playing golf. Every day, he played a full 18 holes at the imaginary country club, as if he saw himself dressed in his golfing clothes. He smelled the fragrance of the trees and the freshly trimmed grass. He experienced different weather conditions—windy spring days, overcast winter days, and sunny summer mornings. In his imagination, every detail of the tee, the individual blades of grass, the trees, the singing birds, the scampering squirrels and the lay of the course became totally real.

He felt the grip of the club in his hands. He instructed himself as he practiced smoothing out his downswing and the follow?through on his shot. Then he watched the ball arc down the exact center of the fairway, bounce a couple of times and roll to the exact spot he had selected, all in his mind. It took him just as long in imaginary time to play 18 holes as it would have taken in reality. Not a detail was omitted.

Seven days a week. Four hours a day. Eighteen holes. Seven years. Twenty strokes off. Shot a 74.

  A Tragedy Or A Blessing?

Years ago in Scotland, the Clark family had a dream. Clark and his wife worked and saved, making plans for their nine children and themselves to travel to the United States. It had taken years, but they had finally saved enough money and had gotten passports and reservations for the whole family on a new liner to the United States.

The entire family was filled with anticipation and excitement about life in America. However, seven days before their departure, the youngest son was bitten by a dog. The doctor sewed up the boy but hung a yellow sheet on the Clarks' front door. Because of the possibility of rabies, they were being quarantined for fourteen days.

The family's dreams were dashed. They would not be able to make the trip to America as they had planned. The father, filled with disappointment and anger, stomped to the dock to watch the ship leave—without the Clark family. The father shed tears of disappointment and cursed both his son and God for their misfortune.

Five days later, the tragic news spread throughout Scotland—the mighty Titanic had sunk. The unsinkable ship had sunk, taking hundreds of lives with it. The Clark family was to have been on that ship, but because the son had been bitten by a dog, they were left behind in Scotland.

When Mr. Clark heard the news, he hugged his son and thanked him for saving the family. He thanked God for saving their lives and turning what he felt was a tragedy into a blessing.

Although we may not always understand, all things happen for a reason.

  Under Water 求助

Standing by the swimming pool, June was really hot and decided to plunge into the water. The refreshing water cooled her body immediately. Having not swam in the past several years and being a bit out of shape, June began to tire easily.

“Ah, no pain no gain,” June thought to herself. June continued to swim, realizing her head was hurting and her body was feeling like Jell-O. Breathing became difficult. Her vision wasn’t so clear. She saw the life guard and a couple others around the pool. No sense in embarrassing herself or bothering anyone. She continued on. She found herself in the middle of the pool.

Deciding not to make a scene, she continued to swim. Finally she made it to the other side of the pool. Nausea, weakness and exhaustion made it difficult for June to get out of the pool. As she stood, her body swayed back and forth, losing her balance. Realizing she needed help but unable to even say anything, she leaned against the pool side and stood there.

Several minutes later she had enough energy to barely pull her body up out of the pool. Sitting at the side of the pool with her feet in the water she felt the lifeguard was staring at her. June nodded at him, telling him that she was okay. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you’re in trouble and you don’t ask for help? Does stress in your life overwhelm you? We’ve all been there. One suggestion is to take some time for yourself. Ask for help. There is nothing wrong in asking for help. June could have drowned. We all have the tendency, as June did, to plow through life not regarding your warning signs.

Perhaps you may find yourself avoiding help because you’re afraid you’ll be made a laughing stock. Please, stop and ask for help — before you find yourself “drowning”. Life has many ups and downs. Such stressors can lead to situations and/or feelings unbearable.

When you find yourself unable to “keep your head above water,” stop. Look around. And Listen. Listen for ideas from within that can help you. In such a situation, if we panic, we’ll almost certainly slip further into trouble. You can find peace after you understand the chaos. Always take time to listen to your body. Be kind to yourself. You’ll find the journey of life happier and more fulfilling.
